ياO أَخيmy brother قَدindeed وَهَبتُI have forgiven ذَنبَthe offense of زَمانٍtime
يا أَخي قَد وَهَبتُ ذَنبَ زَمانٍ
طَرَقَتنيassailed me صُروفُهُits vicissitudes بِالمَهالِكwith deadly perils
طَرَقَتني صُروفُهُ بِالمَهالِك
O my brother, I have forgiven the offense of time,
O my brother, I have forgiven the sins of an era
whose vicissitudes assailed me with deadly perils.
Whose turns have struck me with perdition
لَمdid not يَهَبgrant ليto me صُبابَةًa small remnant مِنof رُقادٍsleep
لَم يَهَب لي صُبابَةً مِن رُقادٍ
لَمdid not يَجُدbestow ليto me فيهاin it بِطَيفِwith the phantom of خَيالِكyour image
لَم يَجُد لي فيها بِطَيفِ خَيالِك
It never granted me a remnant of sleep
It did not grant me any youthful slumber
without bestowing on me, within it, the phantom of your image.
Nor did I find in it your phantom, my imagination
قَدindeed قَنِعناwe have been content بِذَلِكَwith that النَزرِscant share مِنهُfrom it
قَد قَنِعنا بِذَلِكَ النَزرِ مِنهُ
وَغَفَرناand we have forgiven لَهُfor it الذُنوبَthe sins لِذَلِكfor that reason
وَغَفَرنا لَهُ الذُنوبَ لِذَلِك
We have been content with that scant share from it,
We have been satisfied with that bit from it
and for that have forgiven it its sins.
And we forgave it the sins for that
