If one of us is in a tribe,
If one of us is in a tribe
He rises above it, and if the noose tightens, he protects it.
He raises it even if the siege is tight, he protects it

And never does it take counsel without his becoming its elder;
It does not become ignoble except he becomes its elder
Nor does it go to war without his being its champion.
Nor does it fight except he becomes its hero

Nor, when his tents are pitched among the tents,
Nor are its tents pitched between tents
Do any others become a refuge for night visitors.
Except his become the abode of visitors and no others
