عَرَفتُI came to know الشَرَّevil لاnot لِلشَرfor evil
عَرَفتُ الشَرَّ لا لِلشَر
رِcompletion of “evil” from the preceding line لَكِنbut لِتَوَقّيهِto guard against it
رِ لَكِن لِتَوَقّيهِ
I came to know evil, not for evil’s sake,
I've come to know evil, not for evil's sake,
but to guard against it.
But to avoid and distance myself from it.
وَمَنand whoever لَمdid not يَعرِفِknow الشَرَّevil
وَمَن لَم يَعرِفِ الشَرَّ
مِنَfrom الخَيرِgood يَقَعfalls فيهِinto it
مِنَ الخَيرِ يَقَع فيهِ
And whoever does not distinguish evil
Whoever knows not evil and its ways,
from good falls into it.
Will fall unwittingly into evil midst the good.
