أَلزَمَنيhe charged me with ذَنباًwrongdoing بِلاwithout ذَنبِwrongdoing
وَلَجَّand he persisted فيin الهِجرانِestrangement وَالعَتبِand reproach
He charged me with wrongdoing, though I had done no wrong,
He blamed me for a sin I did not commit
And persisted in estrangement and reproach.
And plunged into estrangement and reproach
أُحاوِلُI strive for الصَبرَpatience عَلىin the face of هَجرِهِhis abandonment
وَالصَبرُand patience مَحظورٌforbidden عَلىto الصَبِّthe ardent lover
I try to bear his abandonment patiently,
I try to be patient with his abandonment
But patience is forbidden to the lovesick.
But patience is forbidden for someone in love
وَأَكتُمُand I conceal الوَجدَpassion وَقَدand already أَصبَحَتhave become
عَيناهُhis two eyes عَينَينِtwo spies عَلىupon القَلبِthe heart
And I conceal my passion, though now
I conceal my passion though it has become
His eyes have become two spies upon my heart.
Like two eyes spying on my heart
قَدindeed كُنتُI was ذاpossessed of صَبرٍpatience وَذاand possessed of سَلوَةٍsolace
فَاِستَشهِداso both were martyred فيin طاعَةِobedience to الحُبِّlove
I once possessed patience and solace,
I used to be patient and calm
But both were martyred in obedience to love.
But they perished obeying love
