بَكَيتُI wept فَلَمّاand when لَمnot أَرَI saw الدَمعَthe tears نافِعيof use to me

I wept; when I found that tears were of no use to me,
I turned to patience more bitter than aloe sap.
وَقَدَّرتُand I supposed أَنَّthat الصَبرَpatience بَعدَafter فِراقِهِمparting from them

And I thought that patience, after parting from them,
would sustain me awhile—but I was consoled for the loss of my patience.
