وَكُنتُAnd I used to إِذاwhenever مانابَنيbefell me مِنهُfrom him نائِبٌsome affliction
لَطَفتُI dealt gently لِقَلبيwith my heart أَوuntil يُقيمَit would make لَهُfor him عُذراan excuse
And whenever some hurt from him befell me,
I would coax my heart until it found him an excuse.
وَأَكرَهُAnd I dislike إِعلامَinforming الوُشاةِthe tale-bearers بِهَجرِهِof his desertion
فَأَعتِبُهُso I reproach him سِرّاًsecretly وَأَشكُرُهُand I thank him جَهراopenly
And I dislike letting the tale-bearers know he has forsaken me,
so I reproach him in secret and thank him openly.
وَهَبتُI relinquished لِضَنّيfor my cherished one سوءَbadness ظَنّيmy opinion وَلَمand did not أَدَعI leave
عَلىin حالِهِits state قَلبيmy heart يُسِرُّsecretly harbors لَهُtoward him شَرّاill will
For my cherished one I relinquished my mistrust, and did not leave
my heart as it was, harboring secret ill will toward him.
