يَعُزُّis grievous عَلىto الأَحِبَّةِthe loved ones بِالشَآمِin al-Sham
حَبيبٌa beloved باتَspent the night مَمنوعَdenied المَنامِsleep
It grieves my loved ones in al-Sham
That one they love spends the night denied sleep.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لِلصَبورِam surely steadfast عَلىin the face of الرَزاياcalamities
وَلَكِنَّbut الكَلامَthe wounds عَلىupon الكَلامِthe wounds
And I am indeed steadfast under calamities,
But wounds are piled upon wounds:
جُروحٌwounds لايَزَلنَthey never cease يَرِدنَarriving مِنّيin me
عَلىupon جُرحٍa wound قَريبِrecent in العَهدِtime دامِbleeding
Wounds keep coming upon me,
Upon a recent wound, still bleeding.
تَأَمَّلَنيhe studied me الدُمُستُقُthe Domestikos إِذwhen رَآنيhe saw me
فَأَبصَرَso he beheld صيغَةَthe form of اللَيثِthe lion الهُمامِthe valiant
The Domestikos studied me when he saw me,
And beheld the form of a valiant lion.
أَتُنكِرُنيdo you deny knowing me? كَأَنَّكَas though you لَستَare not تَدريaware
بِأَنّيthat I am ذَلِكَthat البَطَلُthe hero المُحاميthe defender
Do you deny knowing me, as though unaware
That I am that hero, the defender,
وَأَنّيand that I إِذwhen نَزَلتُI descended عَلىupon دُلوكٍDuluk
تَرَكتُكَI left you غَيرَnot مُتَّصِلِjoined together النِظامِthe formation
And that, when I descended upon Duluk,
I left you with your formation broken?
وَلَمّاand when أَنthat عَقَدتُI bound fast صَليبَthe firmness of رَأيِيmy resolve
تَحَلَّلَcame undone عِقدُthe knot of رَأيِكَyour resolve فيin المَقامِthe encounter
And when I bound fast my firm resolve,
The knot of your resolve unraveled in the encounter.
وَكُنتَand you used to تَرىfavor الأَناةَdeliberation وَتَدَّعيهاand claim it
فَأَعجَلَكَso it hurried you الطِعانُspear-fighting عَنِaway from الكَلامِspeech
You prized deliberation and claimed it as your own,
But spear-thrusts left you no time to speak.
وَبِتُّand I spent the night مُؤَرِّقاًcausing sleeplessness مِنfrom غَيرِother than سُقمٍillness
حَمىbarred جَفنَيكَyour eyelids طيبَthe sweetness of النَومِsleep حامِa defender
And I spent the night keeping you awake, though you were not ill;
A defender barred your eyelids from sweet sleep.
وَلاand not أَرضىI approve of الفَتىthe young man مالَمunless يُكَمِّلhe completes
بِرَأيِwith the judgment of الكَهلِthe mature man إِقدامَthe boldness of الغُلامِthe youth
Nor do I esteem a young man unless he complements
A youth's boldness with a mature man's judgment.
فَلاso may you not هُنَّئتَهاbe gladdened by it نُعمىa boon بِأَسريthrough my capture
وَلاand may not وُصِلَتbe joined سُعودُكَyour good fortunes بِالتَمامِto fulfillment
So may you find no joy in the boon of my capture,
And may your good fortune never reach fulfillment.
أَماis it not مِنamong أَعجَبِthe strangest of الأَشياءِthings عِلجٌa foreign brute
يُعَرِّفُنيhe teaches me الحَلالَthe lawful مِنَfrom الحَرامِthe forbidden
Is it not among the strangest things that a foreign brute
Should teach me what is lawful and what is forbidden?
وَتَكنُفُهُand they surround him بِطارِقَةٌpatrician commanders تُيوسٌhe-goats

And he is flanked by patricians—he-goats
Vying with one another in their enormous beards.
لَهُمthey have خِلَقُthe forms of الحَميرِasses فَلَستَso you do not تَلقىencounter
فَتىًa young man مِنهُمamong them يَسيرِwalking بِلاwithout حِزامِa girth
They have the shapes of asses; you will never meet
A young man among them walking without a girth.
يُريغونَthey seek out العُيوبَfaults وَأَعجَزَتهُمbut these have eluded them
وَأَيُّand what العَيبِfault يوجَدُis found فيin الحُسامِthe keen sword
They hunt for faults, but the faults elude them;
And what fault can be found in a keen sword?
وَأَصعَبُand the hardest خُطَّةٍplight وَأَجَلُّand the gravest أَمرٍmatter
مُجالَسَةُkeeping company with اللِئامِthe base عَلىfor الكِرامِthe noble
And the harshest plight, the gravest trial,
Is for the noble to sit among the base.
أَبيتُI spend the night مُبَرَّأًblameless مِنfrom كُلِّevery عَيبٍfault
وَأُصبِحُand I rise in the morning سالِماًsafe مِنfrom كُلِّevery ذامِreproach
I pass the night free of every fault,
And rise in the morning free of every reproach.
وَمَنand whoever لَقِيَhas faced الَّذيwhat لاقَيتُI have faced هانَتbecome easy

Whoever has faced what I have faced holds lightly
The watering places of dreadful death.
ثَناءٌpraise طَيِّبٌgood لاno خُلفَfalsehood فيهِin it
وَأَثارٌand deeds كَأَثارِlike the deeds of العَمامِthe paternal uncles
Sweet praise, with no falsehood in it,
And deeds like the deeds of my paternal uncles,
وَعِلمُand the knowledge of فَوارِسِthe horsemen of الحَيَّينِboth tribes أَنّيthat I
قَليلٌfew مَنwho يَقومُcan stand لَهُمfor them مَقاميin my place
And the horsemen of both tribes know that I am one
Whose place among them few can fill.
وَفيand in طَلَبِpursuit of الثَناءِpraise مَضىpassed away بُجَيرٌBujayr
وَجادَand was generous بِنَفسِهِwith his life كَعبُKa'b بنُson of مامِMam
And in pursuit of praise Bujayr met his end,
And Ka'b ibn Mam freely gave his life.
أُلامُI am blamed عَلىfor التَعَرُّضِexposing myself لِلمَناياto deaths
وَليyet I have سَمعٌhearing أَصَمُّdeaf عَنِto المَلامِreproach
I am blamed for exposing myself to death,
Yet my ear is deaf to reproach.
بَنوthe sons of الدُنياthis world إِذاwhen ماتواthey die سَواءٌequal
وَلَوeven if عَمَرَlives المُعَمِّرُthe long-lived man أَلفَa thousand عامِyears
The sons of this world are equal when they die,
Even if the longest-lived lives a thousand years.
إِذاwhen مالاحَever flashes ليbefore me لَمعانُthe gleam of بَرقٍlightning
بَعَثتُI send إِلىto الأَحِبَّةِthe loved ones بِالسَلامِwith greetings of peace
Whenever a gleam of lightning flashes before me,
I send greetings to my loved ones.
