لِمَسعىً غَيرِ مُختارِ

We agreed to meet in March

for a venture not of our choosing.

وَقُمنا نَسحَبُ الرَيطَ

وَقُمنا نَسحَبُ الرَيطَ

إِلى حانَةِ خَمّارِ

إِلى حانَةِ خَمّارِ

And we rose, trailing our fine robes,

to a wine-seller's tavern.

فَلَم نَدرِ وَقَد فاحَت

فَلَم نَدرِ وَقَد فاحَت

لَنا مِن جانِبِ الدارِ

لَنا مِن جانِبِ الدارِ

We could not tell, as fragrance wafted

toward us from the side of the house,

بِخَمّارٍ مِنَ القَومِ

بِخَمّارٍ مِنَ القَومِ

نَزَلنا أَم بِعَطّارِ

نَزَلنا أَم بِعَطّارِ

whether with a wine-seller among the people

we had lodged, or with a perfumer.

فَلَمّا أُلبِسَ اللَيلُ

فَلَمّا أُلبِسَ اللَيلُ

لَنا ثَوباً مِنَ القارِ

لَنا ثَوباً مِنَ القارِ

Then, when night was clothed

for us in a robe of pitch,

وَقُلنا أَوقِدِ النارَ

وَقُلنا أَوقِدِ النارَ

لِطُرّاقٍ وَزُوّارِ

لِطُرّاقٍ وَزُوّارِ

and we said, “Light the fire

for night callers and visitors,”

وَجا خاصِرَةَ الدَنِّ

وَجا خاصِرَةَ الدَنِّ

فَأَغنانا عَنِ النارِ

فَأَغنانا عَنِ النارِ

he pierced the wine-jar's flank

and spared us the need for fire.

وَما في طَلَبِ اللَهوِ

وَما في طَلَبِ اللَهوِ

عَلى الفِتيانِ مِن عارِ

عَلى الفِتيانِ مِن عارِ

And in the pursuit of pleasure

there is no shame for young men.
