Hear! Tell the nobles of Banu Kilab,
when their mourning women wail in the morning:
جَزَيتُI repaid سَفيهَهُمtheir fool سوءًevil بِسوءٍwith evil
فَلاso no حَرَجاًoffense أَتَيتُI committed وَلاnor جُناحاsin
I repaid their fool with evil for evil,
so I have committed neither offense nor sin.

I killed the young man of Banu Amr ibn Abd,
and the man among them with the broadest courtyard for guests.
قَتَلتُI killed مُعَوِّداًa habitual provider of عَلَلَsecond draughts العَشاياof the evenings

I killed one wont to offer draught after draught at evening;
the slaves selected milch camels for him.
وَلَستُand I do not أَرىsee فَساداًwrong فيin فَسادٍa wrong

And I see no wrong in a wrong
that brings good along its course.
