بَنيsons of زُرارَةَZurara لَوif صَحَّتwere sound طَرائِقُكُمyour ways
لَكُنتُمُyou would have been عِندَناwith us فيin المَنزِلِthe place الدانيnear
O sons of Zurara, had your ways been sound,
you would have held a place close to us.
لَكِنbut جَهِلتُمyou did not recognize لَدَيناwith us حَقَّthe due of أَنفُسَكُمyourselves
وَباعَand sold بائِعُكُمyour trader رِبحاًgain بِخُسرانِfor loss
But you did not recognize your own due with us,
and your trader bartered gain for loss.
فَإِنso if تَكونواyou are بَراءًinnocent مِنof جِنايَتِهِhis offense
فَإِنَّthen indeed مَنwhoever رَفَدَaided الجانيthe wrongdoer هُوَhe himself الجانيthe wrongdoer
So if you are innocent of his offense,
whoever aids the wrongdoer is himself a wrongdoer.
مابالُكُمwhat ails you? ياah! أَقَلَّmay diminish اللَهِGod خَيرَكُمُyour good fortune
لاتَغضَبونَyou feel no anger لِهَذاfor this الموثَقِthe bound one العانيthe captive
What ails you—may God diminish your good fortune—
that you feel no anger for this bound captive?
جارٌa protected neighbor نَزَعناهُwe tore him away قَسراًby force فيin بُيوتُكُمُyour homes
وَالخَيلُand the horses تَعصِبُcrowd together فُرساناًhorsemen بِفُرسانِwith horsemen
A neighbor under your protection, whom we seized by force within your homes,
while the horses pressed horsemen against horsemen,
إِذwhen لاتَرُدّونَyou do not repel عَنfrom أَكنافِthe environs of أَهلِكُمُyour families
شَوازِبَthe lean ones الخَيلِof the horses مِنin مَثنىًpairs وَوِحدانِand single ones
when you did not drive back from your families' quarters
the lean steeds, in pairs and singly.
بِالمَرجِat al-Marj إِذwhen أُمُّmother of بَسّامٍBassam تُناشِدُنيshe implores me
بَناتُthe daughters of عَمِّكَyour paternal uncle ياO حارِHarith (shortened vocative) بنَson of حَمدانِHamdan
At al-Marj, when Umm Bassam implored me:
"Your uncle's daughters, O Harith, son of Hamdan!"
فَبِتُّso I spent the night أَثنيI turn back صُدورَthe breasts of الخَيلِthe horses ساهِمَةًgaunt
بِكُلِّwith every مُضطَغِنٍgrudge-holder بِالحِقدِwith hatred مَلآنِfilled
So I spent the night turning back the breasts of gaunt steeds,
bearing every resentful man, brimming with hatred.
وَنَحنُand we قَومٌa people إِذاwhen عُدناwe return بِسَيِّئَةٍwith harm
عَلىupon العَشيرَةِthe clan أَعقَبناwe follow it بِإِحسانِwith kindness
And we are a people who, when we do harm
to our clan, follow it with kindness.
