تَعَرَّضَconfronted مِنّيfrom me جانِبٌa side لَهُمُto them صَلدُunyielding
I turned kindly toward ʿAmr ibn Taghlib after
a flint-hard side of me had confronted them.
وَلاand no خَيرَgood فيin هَجرِforsaking العَشيرَةِthe clan لِاِمرِئٍfor a man

And there is no good in forsaking one's clan for a man
who goes out at evening or dawn under his clan's reproach.
وَلَكِنbut rather دُنُوُّcloseness لايُوَلَّدُdoes not breed هِجرَةًestrangement
وَهَجرٌand parting رَفيقٌgentle لايُصاحِبُهُdoes not accompany it زُهدُindifference
Rather, closeness that breeds no estrangement,
and a gentle parting unaccompanied by indifference.
نُباعِدُهُمwe keep them distant طَوراًat times كَماas يُبعَدُare kept distant العِدىthe enemies
وَنِكرِمُهُمand we honor them طَوراًat times كَماas يُكرَمُis honored الوَفدُthe delegation
At times we keep them distant, as enemies are kept distant,
and at times we honor them, as a delegation is honored.
