قَدindeed ضَجَّhas cried out جَيشُكَyour army مِنfrom طولِthe length of القِتالِthe fighting بِهِwith it
وَقَدand indeed شَكَتكَhave complained about you إِلَيناto us الخَيلُthe horses وَالإِبِلُand the camels
Your army has cried out at the long fighting you have put it through,
And horses and camels have complained of you to us.
وَقَدand indeed دَرىhave known الرومُthe Byzantines مُذsince جاوَرتَyou drew near أَرضَهُمُtheir land
أَنthat لَيسَnot يَعصِمُهُمprotects them سَهلٌa plain وَلاnor جَبَلُa mountain
And the Byzantines have known, since you drew near their land,
That neither plain nor mountain can protect them.
فيon كُلِّevery يَومٍday تَزورُyou visit الثَغرَthe frontier لاضَجَرٌno weariness
يَثنيكَturns you away عَنهُfrom it وَلاnor شُغلٌoccupation وَلاnor مَلَلُboredom
Every day you visit the frontier; no weariness
Turns you from it, nor occupation nor boredom.
فَالنَفسُso the soul جاهِدَةٌstriving وَالعَينُand the eye ساهِدَةٌsleepless
وَالجَيشُand the army مُنهَمِكٌfully engaged وَالمالُand the wealth مُبتَذَلُfreely spent
So your soul is striving, and your eye is sleepless,
And your army is fully engaged, and your wealth freely spent.
تَوَهَّمَتكَimagined you كِلابٌKilab غَيرَnot قاصِدِهاheading toward them
وَقَدwhile already تَكَنَّفَكَhad surrounded you الأَعداءُthe enemies وَالشُغُلُand duties
Kilab imagined you were not heading toward them,
While enemies and duties had surrounded you,
حَتّىuntil رَأَوكَthey saw you أَمامَin front of الجَيشِthe army تَقدُمُهُyou lead it
وَقَدand indeed طَلَعتَyou appeared عَلَيهِمupon them دونَbefore ماwhat أَمِلواthey hoped for
Until they saw you in front of the army, leading it,
And you had come upon them sooner than they had hoped.
فَاِستَقبَلوكَso they met you بِفُرسانٍwith riders أَسِنَّتُهاtheir spearheads
سودُblack البَراقِعِthe face-veils وَالأَكوارُand the camel saddles وَالكِلَلُand the canopies
So they met you with riders whose spearheads
Were black face-veils, camel saddles, and canopies.
فَكُنتَso you were أَكرَمَthe most generous مَسؤولٍone petitioned وَأَفضَلَهُand the best of them
إِذاwhen وَهَبتَyou give فَلاthen no مَنٌّreminding of favors وَلاnor بُخُلُstinginess
So you were the most generous and best of those petitioned:
When you give, there is neither reproach for the gift nor stinginess.
