ياطولَOh, how long شَوقِيَmy yearning إِنif قالواthey said الرَحيلُthe departure غَداtomorrow
لَاmay not فَرَّقَseparate اللَهُGod فيماin what بَينَناbetween us أَبَداever
Oh, how long my yearning will be if they say, 'Departure is tomorrow!'
May God never separate us.
يامَنO you whom أُصافيهِI cherish him sincerely فيin قُربٍnearness وَفيand in بُعدٍdistance
وَمَنand the one whom أُخالِصُهُI am devoted to him إِنif غابَhe was absent أَوor شَهِداhe was present
O you whom I cherish sincerely, near and far,
and to whom I am devoted, whether absent or present,
لاmay not يُبعِدِsend far away اللَهُGod شَخصاًa person لاnot أَرىI find أَنَساًsolace
وَلاand not تَطيبُis pleasant لِيَfor me الدُنياthe world إِذاwhen بَعُداhe is far away
may God not send far away one without whom I find no solace,
nor is the world sweet to me when he is far away.
راعَdismayed الفِراقُparting فُؤاداًa heart كُنتَyou used to تُؤنِسُهُyou comfort it
وَذَرَّand scattered بَينَbetween الجُفونِthe eyelids الدَمعَtears وَالسَهَداand sleeplessness
Parting has dismayed a heart you used to comfort,
and scattered tears and sleeplessness between the eyelids.
أَضحىhe became وَأَضحَيتُand I became فيin سِرٍّprivate وَفيand in عَلَنٍpublic
أَعُدُّهُI count him والِداًa father إِذsince عَدَّنيhe counted me وَلَداa son
He and I have come to this, in private and in public:
I count him as a father, since he counted me as a son.
مازالَhe has continued يَنظِمُhe composes فِيَّabout me الشِعرَpoetry مُجتَهِداًdiligently
فَضلاًout of generosity وَأَنظِمُand I compose فيهِabout him الشِعرَpoetry مُجتَهِداdiligently
He has kept diligently composing poetry about me,
out of generosity; and I diligently compose poetry about him,
حَتّىuntil اِعتَرَفتُI conceded وَعَزَّتنيand overcame me فَضائِلُهُhis virtues
وَفاتَand outstripped سَبقاًin taking the lead وَحازَand won الفَضلَdistinction مُنفَرِداalone
until I conceded, overcome by his virtues,
and he outstripped me, taking the lead, and won distinction alone.
إِنif قَصَّرَfell short الجُهدُeffort عَنof إِدراكِattaining غايَتِهِits goal
فَأَعذَرُthen most excusable الناسِof people مَنthe one who أَعطاكَgave you ماوَجَداwhat he had available
If effort falls short of reaching its goal,
then the most excusable of people is he who gave you what he had.

أَيّامُناour days أَبَداًforever فيin ظِلِّهِhis shade جُدَداfresh
May God preserve our lord for us, and may they ever remain—
our days, forever fresh beneath his shade.
لايَترُقِmay not strike النازِلُthe calamity المَحذورُdreaded ساحَتَهُhis courtyard
وَلاand may not تَمُدُّstretch out إِلَيهِtoward him الحادِثاتُmisfortunes يَداa hand
May the dreaded calamity not strike his courtyard,
and may misfortunes not stretch a hand toward him.
الحَمدُpraise لِلَّهِto God حَمداًpraise دائِماًunceasing أَبَداforever
أَعطانِيَgave me الدَهرُTime مالَمwhat ... did not يُعطِهِgive it أَحَداanyone
Praise be to God, unceasing praise forever.
Time has given me what it has given no one else.
