بِصاحِبٍ مِثلِ نَصلِ السَيفِ وَضّاحِ
And sometimes I go forth at evening, my eyes content, rejoicing,
My eyes sparkle with joy
With a companion radiant as the blade of a sword,
For a friend like a sword's sharp blade

Sweet in character, his ways worthy of praise,
Of gentle manners and praised conduct
Chaste of ear, so that the reproacher may be humbled.
Whose eloquence silences even the chatterbox

When he saw my glances upon his cheeks,
When he saw the glances of my eyes
Seeking what I desired of sweet basil and wine,
I obtain whatever I wish of basil and comfort

He wrapped the veil over a face whose features
He veiled his face with a wrap
Were like a moon, or the light of a lamp.
Like a moon or the glow of a lamp
