وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَنويsurely intend هَجرُهُforsaking him فَيَرُدُّنيyet it draws me back
هَوىًlove بَينَbetween أَثناءِthe folds of الضُلوعِthe ribs دَفينُburied
And indeed I intend to forsake him, yet I am drawn back
Though I intend to part from him, he draws me back
By love buried within the folds of my ribs.
With love nestled between my ribs, hidden away.
فَيَغلُظُso hardens قَلبيmy heart ساعَةًfor a while ثُمَّthen أَنثَنيI relent
وَأَقسوand I grow harsh عَلَيهِtoward him تارَةًat times وَأَلينُand I soften
So my heart hardens for a while, then I relent,
My heart hardens for a time, then softens again
And I am harsh toward him at times, and I soften.
And I alternate harshness with gentleness toward him.
وَقَدand indeed كانَthere was ليfor me عَنaway from وِدِّهِhis affection كُلُّevery مَذهَبٍpath
وَلَكِنَّbut مِثليone like me بِالإِخاءِwith friendship ضَنينُloath to part
And every path away from his affection was open to me,
I have shunned his affection in every possible way,
But one like me is loath to relinquish friendship.
Yet one like me is miserly with brotherly love.
وَلاand no غَروَwonder أَنthat أَعنوI submit لَهُto him بَعدَafter عِزَّةٍpride
فَقَدرِيَfor my standing فيin عِزِّthe honor of الحَبيبِthe beloved يَهونُcounts for little
And no wonder I submit to him after being proud,
No wonder I show weakness after pride
For my own standing counts for little beside the beloved's honor.
For my destiny is to be humbled by a beloved's dignity.
