And a place among the fairest of places,

where the scout brings the shepherd glad tidings

of fertility, pasture, and broad open spaces.

As though the face of the plain were covered,

    in every color and kind,

by what the Romans wove for Dhu al-Kilaʿ—

the Creator's handiwork, not that of craftsmen.

And water descends from the hills,

as gleaming swords are drawn for combat.

And the turtledove trilled for the ear,

and the water danced to the rhythm.

And yellow oxeye was spread across the land,

as though it were the lion among beasts of prey.
