وَخَريدَةٍand a maiden كَرُمَتwas cherished عَلىby آبائِهاher fathers
وَخَريدَةٍ كَرُمَت عَلى آبائِها
وَعَلىand before بَوادِرِfirst charges of خَيلِناour cavalry لَمnot تُكرَمِwas she honored
وَعَلى بَوادِرِ خَيلِنا لَم تُكرَمِ
And a maiden, cherished by her fathers,
A bride who honored her ancestors
Yet before our cavalry's first charges, she was shown no honor.
Yet did not honor our first warriors
خُطِبَتshe was wooed بِحَدِّwith the edge of السَيفِthe sword حَتّىuntil زُوِّجَتshe was married off
خُطِبَت بِحَدِّ السَيفِ حَتّى زُوِّجَت
كَرهاًagainst her will وَكانَand was صَداقُهاher bridal dower لِلمَقسِمِfor the division of spoils
كَرهاً وَكانَ صَداقُها لِلمَقسِمِ
She was wooed with the sword's edge until she was married off,
Was wed at swordpoint though loath to wed
Against her will; her bridal dower went into the spoils to be shared.
Her bride-price paid to the arbiter
راحَتshe departed وَصاحِبُهاand her husband بِعُرسٍat a wedding feast حاضِرٌpresent
راحَت وَصاحِبُها بِعُرسٍ حاضِرٌ
يُرضيhe pleases الإِلَهَGod وَأَهلُهاand her family فيin مَأتَمِa mourning gathering
يُرضي الإِلَهَ وَأَهلُها في مَأتَمِ
She departed, her husband present at a wedding feast,
She left while her groom and his kin rejoiced
Pleasing God, while her family were at a mourning gathering.
Pleasing their god while her family mourned
