وَداعٍand a challenger دَعانيcalled to me وَالأَسِنَّةُand the spearheads دونَهُbefore him
وَداعٍ دَعاني وَالأَسِنَّةُ دونَهُ
صَبَبتُI poured عَلَيهِupon him بِالجَوابِin reply جَواديmy steed
صَبَبتُ عَلَيهِ بِالجَوابِ جَوادي
And a challenger called to me, with spearheads between us;
A parting friend bid me adieu, though yearning held me back,
I sent my steed surging upon him in reply.
I poured on him my streaming generosity.
جَنَبتُI led alongside إِلىbeside مَهريmy colt المَنيعِيِّthe Manīʿī مُهرَهُhis colt
جَنَبتُ إِلى مَهري المَنيعِيِّ مُهرَهُ
وَجَلَّلتُand I covered مِنهُfrom him بِالنَجيعِwith gore نِجادِmy sword-belt
وَجَلَّلتُ مِنهُ بِالنَجيعِ نِجادِ
I led his colt alongside my Manīʿī colt,
I turned my steed aside unto my kinsman hight Meheir,
And covered my sword-belt with his gore.
And from him took as gifts the noblest of horses.
