    Blaming lovers is base,

    for love's ordeal is immense.

How, then, can you hope that I will forget,

when mine is a torment that makes me sit and rise?

And my eye is filled with tears,

and wounds fill the hollow of my ribs.

    تَصحَبُني مُقلَةٌ نَنمومُ

    O my people, I am a man who keeps his secrets;

a telltale eye keeps me company.

    يالَيتَ أَوقاتُهُ تَدومُ

    Night is a veil for lovers;

if only its hours would endure.

The star is my companion all night long,

until, when the stars have set,

dawn gives me over to afflictions,

so there is neither beloved nor companion.

    يَطولُ مِن دونِها الرَسيمُ

    In Alij's two sandy tracts lie traces of dwellings;

long is the camel-trot needed to reach them.

    ما عَهدُ إِرقالِها ذَميمُ

    I made tireless she-camels kneel among them;

their accustomed swift gait is beyond reproach.

    Crossing every valley strengthened them,

each made fertile by its luxuriant vegetation.

In their night travel, they gave back to Time

what herbage and the stars had bestowed.

Such are among the ways of the nights:

what bliss creates is destined for misery.

Between my ribs dwells an abiding love

for the house of Warqa, never departing.

    Time changes everything,

yet my love for them is sound and whole.

I bar any who seek it, save them,

from it, as women of the household are guarded.

And can any kinsman equal them,

or any close friend come near them?

    تَضُمُّ أَغصانَنا أَرومُ

    And we belong to one clan and family;

    ancestral roots embrace our branches.

Maternal uncles have not divided us

in noble lineage, nor have paternal uncles.

Wa'il raised us high, and triumphant

in glory were our maternal uncles, Tamim.

Their affection is pure and true,

and their covenant is firm and enduring.

So their bond with us is new,

yet for our fathers it is ancient.

We shall uphold it as long as mating brings pregnancy

to a female, and a lowing doe bears young.

We draw our paternal cousins close to us,

out of generosity, as the noble do.

For them are helping hands in every crisis,

by which grave, crushing calamity is turned aside.

And in their defense are sharp tongues,

unyielding in dispute when adversaries rise.

Their hearts have not grown distant from us,

though their bodies have drawn far away.

So may we never lack praise for them,

as though it were strung pearls.

Indeed, ancestral roots have made us kin to them,

whose roots no blame has ever touched.

Those roots will endure, and they will live in bliss,

as long as the Rukn and the Hatim remain.
