أَبىrefused غَربُtorrent هَذاthese الدَمعِtears إِلّاexcept تَسَرُّعاrushing forth
وَمَكنونُand the hidden store هَذاthis الحُبِّlove إِلّاexcept تَضَوُّعاspreading fragrance
This torrent of tears will do nothing but rush forth,
And this hidden love, nothing but spread its fragrance.
وَكُنتُand I was أَرىthinking أَنّيthat I مَعَwith الحَزمِprudence واحِدٌat one
إِذاif شِئتُI wished ليfor me مَمضىًa way forward وَإِنand if شِئتُI wished مَرجِعاa way back
And I thought I was at one with prudence,
With a way forward if I wished, and a way back if I wished.
فَلَمّاbut when اِستَمَرَّpersisted الحُبُّlove فيin غُلَوائِهِits headlong ardor
رَعَيتُI tended مَعَwith المِضياعَةِthe neglectful one الحُبَّlove ماas long as رَعىhe tended
But when love persisted in its headlong ardor,
I tended love with the neglectful one, as long as he tended it.
فَحُزنِيَso my grief حُزنُthe grief الهائِمينَof the lovelorn مُبَرِّحاًagonizing
وَسِرِّيَand my secret سِرُّthe secret العاشِقينَof lovers مُضَيَّعاleft unguarded
So my grief is the racking grief of the lovelorn,
And my secret, the lovers' secret, lies unguarded.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends لِمwhy لاnot تَبكِيانيyou two weep for me صَبابَةًardent longing
أَأَبدَلتُماhave you two exchanged بِالأَجرَعِin place of the sandy plain الفَردِsolitary أَجرَعاa sandy plain
My two friends, why do you not weep for me in longing?
Have you traded the solitary sandy plain for another sandy plain?
عَلَيَّupon me لِمَنfor one whose ضَنَّتbegrudged عَلَيَّto me جُفونُهُhis eyelids
غَوارِبُbillows دَمعٍof tears يَشمَلُengulfs الحَيَّthe clan أَجمَعاall of it
For one whose eyelids begrudged me tears, I bear
Billows of tears that engulf the whole clan.
وَهَبتُI gave away شَبابيmy youth وَالشَبابُand youth مَضِنَّةٌa treasured possession
لِأَبلَجَto a radiant-browed man مِنamong أَبناءِthe sons عَمِّيَof my paternal uncle أَجمَعاall of them
I gave away my youth—though youth is jealously treasured—
To a radiant-browed man among all my paternal cousins.
أَبيتُI pass the night مُعَنّىًtormented مِنfrom مَخافَةِfear of عَتبِهِhis reproach
وَأُصبِحُand I greet the morning مَحزوناًsorrowful وَأُمسيand I enter evening مُرَوَّعاterrified
I pass the night tormented by fear of his reproach,
And greet the morning grieving, and the evening terrified.
فَلَمّاthen when مَضىpassed عَصرُthe season الشَبيبَةِof youth كُلَّهُall of it
وَفارَقَنيand left me شَرخُthe first bloom الشَبابِof youth مُوَدَّعاbidden farewell
Then, when the whole season of youth had passed,
And the bloom of youth had left me, bidden farewell,
تَطَلَّبتُI sought بَينَbetween الهَجرِestrangement وَالعَتبِand reproach فُرجَةًan opening
فَحاوَلتُso I attempted أَمراًa thing لايُرامُunattainable مُمَنَّعاimpregnable
I sought an opening between estrangement and reproach,
So I tried for something unattainable, impregnable.
وَصِرتُand I have come to إِذاwhenever مارُمتُI sought فيin الخَيرِgood fortune لَذَّةًa delight
تَتَبَّعتُهاI pursued it بَينَamong الهُمومُcares تَتَبُّعاpersistent pursuit
And I have come, whenever I seek delight in good fortune,
To pursue it amid cares, searching painstakingly.
وَهاand here أَناI قَدalready حَلّىadorned الزَمانُtime مَفارِقيmy hair-partings
وَتَوَّجَنيand crowned me بِالشَيبِwith gray hair تاجاًa crown مُرَصَّعاjewel-studded
And here I am: time has adorned my hair-partings,
And crowned me with gray hair, a jewel-studded crown.
فَلَوyet if أَنَّنيthat I مُكِّنتُwere enabled مِمّاof what أُريدُهُI desire
مِنَof العَيشِlife يَوماًfor one day لَمnot يَجِدit would find فِيَّin me مَوضِعاًa place
Yet if I were granted what I desire
Of life for a single day, gray hair would find no place in me.
أَماis there not لَيلَةٌa night تَمضيthat passes وَلاnor even بَعضُpart of لَيلَةٍa night
أَسُرُّI gladden بِهاin it هَذاthis الفُؤادَheart المُفَجَّعاgrief-stricken
Will no night pass—not even part of a night—
In which I gladden this grief-stricken heart?
أَماis there not صاحِبٌa friend فَردٌsingle يَدومُendures وَفاؤُهُhis loyalty
فَيُصفيso he gives sincere affection لِمَنto one who أَصفىgave sincere affection وَيَرعىand cares لِمَنfor one who رَعىcared
Is there not a single friend whose loyalty endures,
Who gives sincere affection to the sincere, and cares for those who care?
أَفيis there in كُلِّevery دارٍdwelling ليfor me صَديقٌa friend أَوَدُّهُI love him
إِذاwhen ماتَفَرَّقناwe parted حَفِظتُI kept faith وَضَيَّعاand he neglected it
In every dwelling, do I have a friend I love,
Yet when we part, I keep faith while he neglects it?
أَقَمتُI stayed بِأَرضِin the land الرومِof the Byzantines عامَينِtwo years لاnot أَرىI see
مِنَamong الناسِthe people مَحزوناًanyone grieving وَلاnor مُتَصَنِّعاanyone feigning grief
I stayed two years in the land of the Byzantines without seeing
Anyone grieving among the people, or even feigning grief.
إِذاif خِفتُI feared مِنfrom أَخوالِيَmy maternal uncles الرومِthe Byzantines خُطَّةًa scheme
تَخَوَّفتُI dreaded مِنfrom أَعمامِيَmy paternal uncles العُربِthe Arabs أَربَعاfour
If I feared one scheme from my Byzantine maternal uncles,
I dreaded four from my Arab paternal uncles.
وَإِنand if أَوجَعَتنيhurt me مِنfrom أَعادِيَّmy enemies شيمَةٌa trait
لَقيتُI encountered مِنَamong الأَحبابِloved ones أَدهىmore grievous وَأَوجَعاand more painful
And if a trait of my enemies wounded me,
I found among my loved ones something worse and more painful.
وَلَوand if قَدindeed رَجَوتُI hoped in اللَهَGod لاشَيءَnothing غَيرَهُother than Him
رَجَعتُI returned إِلىto أَعلىsomething higher وَأَمَّلتُand I hoped for أَوسَعاsomething wider
And had I placed my hope in God, and nothing else,
I would have returned to something higher, and cherished wider hopes.
لَقَدindeed قَنِعواthey were content بَعديafter me مِنَinstead of القَطرِrain بِالنَدىwith dew
وَمَنand whoever لَمdoes not يَجِدfind إِلّاexcept القُنوعَcontentment تَقَنَّعاmakes himself content
After me, they have indeed settled for dew instead of rain;
And whoever finds no choice but contentment makes himself content.
وَماand no مَرَّdeparted إِنسانٌperson فَأَخلَفَthen left behind مِثلَهُhis equal
وَلَكِنbut يُزَجّيcarry along الناسُpeople أَمراًa state of affairs مُوَقَّعاimposed
No man has departed and left his equal behind,
But people make do with the lot that befalls them.
تَنَكَّرَturned cold سَيفُSayf (sword) الدينِal-Din (of the faith) لَمّاwhen عَتَبتُهُI reproached him
وَعَرَّضَand made insinuations بيabout me تَحتَbeneath الكَلامِthe words وَقَرَّعاand rebuked
Sayf al-Din turned cold when I reproached him,
And beneath his words he made insinuations about me and rebuked me.
فَقولاso say, both of you لَهُto him مِنout of أَصدَقِthe sincerest الوُدِّaffection أَنَّنيthat I
جَعَلتُكَI made you مِمّاfrom whatever رابَنيtroubled me الدَهرَthroughout life مَفزَعاa refuge
So tell him, with the sincerest affection: I
Have made you my lifelong refuge from whatever disquiets me.
وَلَوand if أَنَّنيthat I أَكنَنتُهُconcealed him فيin جَوانِحيmy breast
لَأَورَقَwould surely put forth leaves ماwhat بَينَbetween الضُلوعِthe ribs وَفَرَّعاand put forth branches
And if I were to shelter him within my breast,
What lies between my ribs would put forth leaves and branches.
فَلاso do not تَغتَرِرbe deceived بِالناسِby people ماكُلُّnot everyone مَنwhom تَرىyou see
أَخوكَyour brother إِذاwhen أَوضَعتَyou hasten فيin الأَمرِthe affair أَوضَعاhe hastens
So do not be deceived by people: not everyone you see
Is your brother, hastening when you hasten in an affair.
وَلاand do not تَتَقَلَّدgird on مايَروعُكَwhat dazzles you حَليُهُits ornament
تَقَلَّدgird on إِذاwhen حارَبتَyou fight ماكانَwhatever is أَقطَعاkeener-edged
And do not gird on something whose ornament dazzles you;
When you fight, gird on what cuts more keenly.
وَلاتَقبَلَنَّand never accept القَولَthe words مِنfrom كُلِّevery قائِلٍspeaker
سَأُرضيكَI shall satisfy you مَرأىًin sight لَستُI do not أُرضيكَsatisfy you مَسمَعاin hearing
And never accept the words of every speaker:
I shall satisfy you by what you see, not by what you hear.
فَلِلَّهِso to God belong إِحسانٌkindness إِلَيَّtoward me وَنِعمَةٌand a blessing
وَلِلَّهِand to God belongs صُنعٌa favor قَدindeed كَفانيspared me التَصَنُّعاaffectation
For God has shown me kindness and blessing,
And God's favor has spared me affectation.
أَرانيhe showed me طَريقَthe path المَكرُماتِof noble deeds كَماas رَأىhe saw fit
عَلِيُّAli وَأَسمانيand raised me عَلىabove كُلِّeveryone مَنwho سَعىstrove
I was shown the path of noble deeds, as he saw fit,
By Ali, who raised me above all who strove.
فَإِنso if يَكُthere is بُطءٌdelay مَرَّةًonce فَلَطالَماthen indeed often
تَعَجَّلَhe hastened نَحويtoward me بِالجَميلِwith kindness وَأَسرَعاand hurried
So if there is delay on one occasion, how often
He has hastened toward me with kindness and sped!
وَإِنand if يَجفُhe is cold فيin بَعضِsome الأُمورِaffairs فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I
لَأَشكُرُهُI surely thank him النُعمىthe blessing الَّتيwhich كانَhe had أَودَعاbestowed
And if he is cold in some matters, then I
Will surely thank him for the blessing he bestowed.
وَإِنand if يَستَجِدَّhe chooses anew الناسَpeople بَعديafter me فَلاthen may he not يَزَلcease
بِذاكَwith that البَديلِreplacement المُستَجَدِّnewly chosen مُمَتَّعاgratified
And if he chooses new people after me, may he ever
Enjoy that newly chosen replacement.
