أَرانيI see myself وَقَوميand my people فَرَّقَتناhave divided us مَذاهِبُpaths
وَإِنand though جَمَعَتناhave united us فيin الأُصولِancestral roots المَناسِبُties of kinship
I see myself and my people divided by differing paths,
My people and I were separated by doctrines,
though ties of kinship unite us at our roots.
Though fundamentals unite us as destined.
فَأَقصاهُمُso the farthest of them أَقصاهُمُthe farthest of them مِنfrom مَساءَتيharming me
وَأَقرَبُهُمand the closest of them مِمّاto what كَرِهتُI disliked الأَقارِبُclose relatives
So the farthest of them is farthest from harming me,
The furthest from me in their displeasure,
and my close relatives are those nearest to what I hate.
The nearest in ties I've come to abhor.
غَريبٌa stranger وَأَهليand my kin حَيثُwhere ماكانَmay be ناظِريmy gaze
وَحيدٌalone وَحَوليand around me مِنof رِجاليmy men عَصائِبُbands
I am a stranger, though my kin are wherever I look,
A stranger amidst kith yet my vision lingers,
alone, though bands of my men surround me.
Alone, while my tribesmen throng as outcasts.
نَسيبُكَyour kinsman مَنwhoever ناسَبتَyou bonded with بِالوُدِّthrough affection قَلبَهُhis heart
وَجارُكَand your neighbor مَنwhoever صافَيتَهُyou sincerely befriended him لاnot المُصاقِبُthe adjoining neighbor
Your kinsman is the one whose heart you have joined to yours in affection,
A kinsman is he who resembles your heart in love,
and your neighbor is the one you sincerely befriend, not the one next door.
A neighbor is he who rivals your noble traits.
وَأَعظَمُand the greatest أَعداءِenemies of الرِجالِmen ثِقاتُهاtheir confidants
وَأَهوَنُand the least formidable مَنthose whom عادَيتَهُyou opposed him مَنthe one whom تُحَارِبُyou fight
And men's greatest enemies are those they trust,
The greatest of man's enemies are his confidants,
and the least formidable of your enemies is the one you fight.
While his slightest foe is who he comes to fight.
وَشَرِّand the worse عَدُوّيكَyour two enemies الَّذيthe one whom لاتُحارِبُyou do not fight
وَخَيرُand the better خَليلَيكَyour two close friends الَّذيthe one whom لاnot تُناسِبُyou are kin to
And the worse of your two enemies is the one you do not fight,
Your worst enemy is he you do not fight,
and the better of your two close friends is the one who is not your kin.
Your best friend is he you do not take side.
لَقَدindeed زِدتُI grew بِالأَيّامِthrough the days وَالناسِand people خِبرَةًexperience
وَجَرَّبتُand I tested حَتّىuntil هَذَّبَتنيrefined me التَجارِبُexperiences
I have indeed grown more experienced through time and people,
With days and people I've gained in experience,
and I have put things to the test until experience refined me.
Trials have refined me in their crucible heated.
وَماand not الذَنبُthe fault إِلّاexcept العَجزُhelplessness يَركَبُهُhe embraces it الفَتىthe young man
وَماand what ذَنبُهُhis fault إِنif حارَبَتهُwaged war against him المَطالِبُthe aims
And the only fault is helplessness a young man embraces,
No fault it is if the youth falls from weakness,
and what fault is his if his aims wage war against him?
No fault it is if ambition impedes his path.
وَمَنand whoever كانَis غَيرَother than السَيفِthe sword كافِلُguarantor of رِزقِهِhis livelihood
فَلِلذِلِّthen for humiliation مِنهُof him لامَحالَةَinevitably جانِبُa part
And if anything but the sword guarantees a man's livelihood,
He who lives not by sword, has humiliation beside,
then humiliation will inevitably claim a part of him.
This inevitably will be his share decided.
وَماand what أُنسُcomfort دارٍa home لَيسَthere is no فيهاin it مُؤانِسٌa companion
وَماand what قُربُcloseness دارٍa home لَيسَthere is no فيهاin it مُقارِبُa close companion
And what comfort is there in a home with no companion?
An abode is not endeared minus its charms,
And what closeness is there in a home with no close companion?
A neighborhood is not near if it is deprived.
