جَبينُكِyour brow لاحَshone فجراًas dawn فيin حماكِyour sanctuary
وثَغرُكِand your lips فاحَwafted fragrance زهراًblossoms منfrom جَناكِyour fruit
Your brow shone as dawn within your sanctuary,
Your forehead shone like the dawn in your care
And your lips wafted blossoms’ fragrance from your fruit.
And your lips bloomed like a flower in your softness
أُحبُّكِI love you ياO مليحةُlovely one حبَّthe love of إلفٍa lover
لإلفٍfor a beloved فيin البعادseparation عليهِfor him باكweeping
I love you, lovely one, with a lover’s love
I love you, beautiful one, with an intimate love
For a beloved he weeps for in separation.
With intimate love though parted, it laments its misfortune
وماand not ذاكَthat الصفيرُwhistling سِوىanything but حنينٍlonging
إلىfor العشِّthe nest المعلَّقِhanging بالأراكin the arak trees
And that whistling is nothing but longing
That whispering is but yearning
For the nest hanging in the arak trees.
For the nest suspended on the boughs
ألستِare you not تُمتِّعينيyou delight me منfrom محيَّاًa face
براهُfashioned it اللهGod منfrom صافٍclear وزاكand pure
Do you not delight me with a face
Don’t you delight me with a radiant smile
That God fashioned from all that is clear and pure?
May God bless it, pure and bright
وأنتِand you صبيَّةٌa young girl وأناand I صبيٌّa young boy
فماso how أحنىtender صِبايَmy youth علىtoward صِباكyour youth
And you are a young girl, and I a young boy—
You’re a young girl and I a young boy
How tender my youth is toward yours!
So why does my youth grieve for your youth?
تحنُّyearns إليكِfor you نفسيmy soul كيso that تَحِنِّيyou may yearn
وتبكيand weeps مُقلتيmy eye لِترىso it may see بُكاكyour weeping
My soul longs for you, so that you too may long,
My soul yearns for you that you may yearn
And my eye weeps to see your weeping.
And my eyelids weep that you may see their weeping
فهلاso why not تنظرينَyou look إليَّat me عَطفاًtenderly
وهلاand why not ترفقينَyou show kindness بمُبتلاكto the one afflicted by you
So will you not look upon me tenderly,
Won’t you look on me with kindness?
And will you not be gentle with the one afflicted by you?
Won’t you be gentle with your afflicted one?

Then we may mingle our tears, eye to eye,
Let us blend our tears, eye to eye
And my heart, with its hopes, may meet your hopes.
And my heart in distress finds your comfort
فليso I have منfrom ثغركِyour lips الأحوىdusky رجاءٌa hope

سِوىother than وحيٍa hint لِوصلِكِfor union with you أوor رِضاكyour favor
For I hope for something from your dusky lips
From your sweet lips I have but one hope:
Beyond a hint of union with you or your favor.
A revelation of your union or consent
أُحبكِI love you ياO ملاكُangel وليسَand is not حبِّيmy love
سِوىexcept وحيٍinspiration بواسطةِthrough the agency of الملاكthe angel
I love you, O angel, and my love is nothing
I love you, my angel, and my love
But inspiration conveyed through the angel.
Is but a revelation from the angels
فكيفَso how يكونُcould there be ليfor me منهُfrom it هلاكٌruin
ولاand not تسعىstrive الملائكُthe angels بالهلاكtoward ruin
How, then, could ruin come to me from it,
So how could it bring me ruin
When angels do not seek destruction?
When angels seek not to destroy?
ولوand even if خُيِّرتُI was given a choice فيregarding سَعديmy good fortune ونحسيand my misfortune
دخلتُI would enter جهنَّماًHell ولثمتُand I would kiss فاكyour mouth
And even if I were given a choice between my fortune and misfortune,
If I had the choice between my joy and sorrow
I would enter Hell and kiss your mouth.
I'd enter Hell and kiss your mouth
