You stirred memories of the most intense pleasures

When you tore away veils from secrets.

O rose that bloomed, leaning and fresh,

Yearning for dew, breezes, and light.

This figure is like a bough, fluttering and outspread,

And beauty has become traces upon your cheeks.

Yet your eye has not lost its sweetness,

And the heart beneath the ashes is still fire.

Its flame shone in your eye, and my liver blazed—

No wonder if I complain of burning and searing heat.

Heedless, you withered your beauty through neglect,

So I spent the night bringing it freshness through touch.

My warmth restored its former warmth,

Until I showed you May in September.

Love is a mirror for the heart, making it radiant,

So the heart, like a bough, puts forth leaves and flowers.

Indeed, among flowers I love the loveliest,

For the sake of a face that shows me beauty in changing forms.

How lovely its redness after its pallor,

When we meet and you fear your family and the neighbor,

Or the watcher who walks at a leisurely pace,

So as not to scare birds away while probing.

O namesake of the most precious jewel, you who are peerless,

You surpassed women, and this jewel surpassed stones.

Blessed be God for a face through which I was guided:

It was al-Radi, and my heart was Mihyar.

The cheek is a flower vase, and the mouth a perfume vessel.

Was your grandfather a perfumer and a florist?

When you breathed, you perfumed the east breeze at eventide,

And you were fragrant through your mouth alone.

Be generous with the pearls and honey it holds

To the jeweler who came to you as a honey-gatherer.

You set an unarmored heart ablaze with arrows,

And I would not have thought your gaze an archer.

You were granted victory, and this love is a battle.

Joy be yours, for you have subdued a tyrant.
