    You pass, O lady of the trailing mantle,

    Like dawn's light appearing as night clears away.

    And when you trailed your ample green train,

    I heard the rustle of the swaying, leafy tree.

    For your body beneath the cloak resembles a bobbin

    Of ivory, fastened for embroidering velvet.

    And your face is what we are told of our heavens,

    And your waist is a notion subtle to the imagination.

    And your mouth, in its breath, is a gust of the east wind,

    When it carries the fragrance of cloves at dawn.

    I saw dew's tears in the cup of a rose,

    Like saliva on a smooth, kissed contour.

    So I wished to gather a bouquet of roses

    For a waist dissolved by the embraces of thoughts.

    فكيفَ وقد حاولت تقريب منزل

    This love grew great with people between us;

    How then, now that I have tried to bring a dwelling nearer?

    وإلا فألقي نظرةً المترحّل

    So if you grant union, send your dream-image bearing news;

    And if not, cast a glance at the departing one.

    I implore you by God, who is witness:

    Enough of your coyness after such long self-abasement.

    I was stricken like a shepherd who was tending his flock,

    Carefree—and whoever does not behold beauty is heedless.

    And when one day he sheltered in a spreading tree's shade,

    And in his hand was a reed flute, like a nightingale,

    He saw a nubile virgin approaching in the meadow

    To gather a bundle of grain ears for her peers.

    And beneath the woolen wrap her brow shone

    Like the flat of a sword beneath a polisher's palm.

    فردَّت سلاماً مثلَ طلٍّ مبلّل

    So he walked toward her, then offered his greeting;

    So she returned a greeting like dew that moistens.

    فباحَ لها بالحبِّ بعدَ التجمُّل

    And after a month had passed, she passed by and greeted him;

    So he confessed his love to her, after holding back.

    But she did not return his love or respond to his talk,

    Nor did she smile like a radiant cloud.

    فيا خيبة الآمالِ بعد التعلّل

    So he said: 'Then my gazelle is not tame;

    So alas for dashed hopes after self-consolation!'

    And the next day, when she came to the field early,

    Like the lights of dawn approaching at the eastern horizons,

    He sang in a soft, tremulous voice

    That melts the heart of an ascetic monk.

    So his voice moved her, and she wept for him,

    And she said: 'My beloved, today settle in my heart.'

    فرقّي لهذا الشاعرِ المتغزِّل

    Surely the shepherd's song softens her heart;

    So be tender toward this poet who sings of love.

    Ibn Hani's words were of love for Jinan,

    And he had won union after long coyness:

    'And I persisted with poems until I beguiled her,

    And I am neither an enticer nor a schemer.'
