    You appeared to us from the lofty palace,

    as the crescent moon rose out of twilight.

    So can the captive lover find a way

    to you, while you are in the radiant celestial sphere?

    I plucked the roses from your cheeks when

    I gazed at your bashful face.

    And neither my hand nor my mouth touched them; rather,

    they were gathered with a furtive glance.

    Even if you hide beauty from my eyes,

    my soul still finds fragrance and refreshment in you.

    And if you lower the veil over it, there comes

    to me the breeze bearing delightful fragrance.

    Look out from a height, and spill

    my blood with impunity, for death is sweet to the wretched.

    So either be true to a noble love,

    or let me die by a Mashrafi sword.

    فعذّبني بأسرٍ من عدي

    In your beauty al-Nu'man holds a kingdom;

    so torment me with a captivity like Adi's.

    إذاً لن تُؤخذي بدمي الزكي

    And from your eyes comes the rout of Kisra's army;

    then you will not be held accountable for my innocent blood.

    O wearer of black over white,

    you made dawn break within the pitch-dark night.

    By your father's life, I have never seen beauty

    like this; so veil it from the wayward.

    Your beauty awed me, so I stood gazing

    at it, like one craning toward a generous giver.

    And O mortal who appeared as a noble angel,

    from whom revelation descends upon the Prophet.

    أهذا الثغرُ صنعُ الجوهري

    I see the most precious jewels in your front teeth;

    is this mouth the jeweler's handiwork?

    فوسواسُ الفؤادِ من الحُلِيِّ

    And the whispering of your ornaments bewitched my heart;

    so the heart's whispers come from the jewelry.

    فكانَ الحقُّ عندَكِ للقوي

    You laughed while lovers lay stricken around you;

    so, in your eyes, right belonged to the strong.

    And death stayed all night before me and behind me,

    because arrows rained down from the bows.

    O you who shoot the arrows of a glance, who will help me

    pull the arrow from my bloodied heart?

    And how can I ward from my breast arrows

    that tear through the armor of the fully armed champion?
