فمنfor, of عمرِspan الصباyouth بقيَremained الأقلُّthe lesser part
When will the dream of happiness fade away?
When will the dream of happiness fade away?
For only the lesser part of youth's span remains.
For of the days of youth, little remains

ودونَand before المجدِglory أسيافٌswords تُسَلُّare unsheathed
A young man's hopes lie close to death,
A young man's hopes, at death, decay
And before glory, swords are unsheathed.
And glory lies beyond swords unsheathed
أماhave ... not? راعَتكَfrightened you أمواجٌwaves وبيدٌand deserts
أماhave ... not? أضناكَexhausted you ترحالٌjourneying وحلُّand encamping
Have waves and deserts not frightened you?
Have waves not shepherded you, and separation?
Have journeying and encamping not exhausted you?
Has not wandering pained you, and halting places?
ذوىwithered خدَّاكَyour cheeks منfrom سهرِsleeplessness اللياليthe nights
وجسمُكَand your body مثلُlike مرجٍa meadow فيهin it محلُdrought
Your cheeks have withered from sleepless nights,
Your cheeks faded from the vigil of nights
And your body is like a meadow stricken by drought.
Your body is like a meadow trampled down
وجلدُكَand your skin شفَّgrew transparent سقماًfrom sickness عنto reveal ضلوعٍribs
فؤادُكyour heart بينهاbetween them يهويsinks ويعلوand rises
And your skin, thinned by sickness, reveals your ribs,
Your skin is worn from sickness in your ribs
Your heart sinks and rises between them.
Your heart between them sinks and climbs

فإنّكَfor you are فوقَupon هَذيthis الأرضِthe earth ظلٌّa shadow
Take solace in the pleasure of death drawing near,
Take pleasure in the coming death
For you are a shadow upon this earth.
For you are on this earth only a shadow
