إذاwhen البَدرُthe full moon زارvisits الأفقَthe horizon وهُوand he is بَهيجُradiant
إِلىtoward الشّعرِpoetry أصبُوI yearn والشجُونُand sorrows تُهِيجُarouse
When the full moon visits the horizon, radiant,
When the radiant full moon rises in the horizon
I yearn for poetry, and sorrows stir me.
I am drawn to poetry and melancholy stirs
وقدand sometimes أَهجرُI forsake الشِعرَpoetry اللّطيفَdelicate مَلالةًout of weariness
وعلماًand knowing بأنّthat الصّنفَthe genre ليسَdoes not يَرُوجfind favor
And I may forsake delicate verse out of weariness,
Though I had abandoned the gentle art out of boredom
and knowing that this kind of verse is not in vogue.
Knowing trends pass and fashions never endure
ولكنّماand yet الشوقُlonging القديمُold يهزُّنيshakes me
فألقيso I cast القَوافيthe rhymes فيinto البُحورِthe seas تَموجsurge
Yet the old longing shakes me,
Yet an old longing shakes me to my core
so I cast rhymes into the seas, where they surge.
And I cast rhymes into seas that surge
فماfor ... is not الشعرُpoetry فيin صَدرىmy breast سِوىanything but السّيلِthe torrent جارفاًsweeping away
أوor النارِthe fire تذكوblazes up والشّعورُand feeling أجيجa roaring blaze
For poetry in my breast is only a sweeping torrent,
For poetry in my heart is but a torrent rushing
or a fire that flares, and feeling is a roaring blaze.
Or fire blazing as passions are stirred
فقلso say للذيto the one who يَلقىencounters المحاسنَbeauties هادئاًunmoved
لحىmay ... curse اللهُGod علجاًa brute ماnot رأتهُsaw him عُلوجُbrutes
So say to whoever encounters beauty unmoved:
Say to the one who meets beauty calmly
May God curse a brute whose like no brutes have seen!
May God grant you healing, untouched heights
علىduring اللّيلةِthe night القمراءِmoonlit طالَgrew long تَسهُّديmy sleepless vigil
وحلَّand settled سُكوتٌsilence حيثُwhere كانhad been ضَجيجclamor
Through the moonlit night, my sleepless vigil stretched on,
On the moonlit night, long was your slumber
and silence settled where clamor had been.
And silence descended where chatter once stirred
فبتُّso I spent the night وقدand already هاجَتhad stirred غَراميmy passion سَكِينةٌstillness
ونشّطنيand enlivened me تحتَbeneath الغُصونِthe boughs أَريجfragrance
So I spent the night, my passion stirred by stillness,
I remained awake as passions soothed me
and fragrance beneath the boughs enlivened me.
And the branches' scent gently stirred
أرىI see البدرَthe full moon ليfor me منfrom جانِبِthe edge of السّهلِthe plain طالعاًrising
وكمand how often أطلَعتهُbrought him into view ليfor me ذُرىًpeaks وثلوجand snows
I see the full moon rising for me from the edge of the plain—
I see the moon rising over the meadow for me
and how often peaks and snows have brought him into view for me!—
How often has it risen through haze and snows
كماjust as أشرَقتshone forth منfrom قَصرِهاher palace ذاتa woman of عفّةٍchastity
علىover رَوضةٍa garden فيهاin it الربيعُspring نَسيجa tapestry
just as a chaste woman shone forth from her palace,
As she emerged, virtuous, from her castle
over a garden where spring is a tapestry.
Onto a garden where spring forever weaves
فخلتُso I imagined فؤاديmy heart طائراًflying منfrom صَبابَتيmy ardent longing
ولَيسَand there is no لماfor what بينَbetween الضّلوعِthe ribs خروجway out
So I imagined my heart taking flight from my longing,
I left my heart soaring, free of my youth
yet what lies between the ribs has no way out.
With no escape from the cage of my ribs
أَحَبَّhe loved التيthe woman whom أحبَبتُهاI loved her ولأجلِهاand for her sake

He loved the woman I loved, and for her sake
I loved she whom I loved, and for her
he appeared, and meadows shone with his radiance.
The meadows stretched wide under the sun
فأوشكَso he was about أنto يَهويfall إلىto الأرضِthe earth قائلاًsaying
إِلىof الحبِّlove فيin أعلىthe highest reaches of السّماءِheaven أحوجmore in need
So he was about to fall to earth, saying:
About to fall to earth, crying out
"In heaven's highest reaches, I need love all the more."
To highest heaven, love I most need
