إذاwhen افترَّparted in a smile ثغرُmouth الخودِthe fair maiden أوor طرفُهاher gaze رَناlingered
تطايرَfluttered قَلبيmy heart منfrom هُناكَthere ومنand from هُناhere
When the fair maiden's lips part in a smile, or her gaze lingers,
If her cheek's rose or her glance smiles
My heart flutters now there, now here,
My heart flutters here and there
كماjust as سَرَحَتroamed فيin حقلِa field of لبنانَLebanon نحلةٌa bee
وفيand in فمِهاits mouth منfrom زَهرهِits flowers أطيَبُthe sweetest الجَنىharvest
Like a bee roaming in a field of Lebanon,
As a bee freely roams Lebanon's meadow
With the sweetest harvest of the field's flowers in its mouth.
With the sweetest nectar in its mouth
أياO مُبدِعاًcreator of هذاthis الجمالَbeauty وموجداًand creator
لآدمَfor Adam حواءَEve المليحةَthe lovely قُلtell لناto us
O you who fashioned this beauty and created
O you who created this beauty and made
Lovely Eve for Adam, tell us:
Adam's Eve so fair, tell us
لماذاwhy خلقتَyou created الغانياتِbeautiful women وقلتَand you said منwhoever
رأىsaw امرأةa woman ثمthen اشتهاهاdesired her فقدthen indeed جنىsinned
Why did you create beautiful women and say, “Whoever
Why you created these charmers and said "He who
Sees a woman and then desires her has sinned”?
Sees a woman and desires her has sinned"
خُلِقناwe were created لِنَهوىso that we love الحسنَbeauty فيin كلّevery صورةٍform
ولاand no أَملٌhope يوماًever بتَغييرof changing طَبعِناour nature
We were created to love beauty in every form,
You created us to love beauty in all its forms
And there is no hope of ever changing our nature.
Never can our nature change
وماand not ظهَرَarose المعلولُthe effect إِلاexcept بعلِّةٍthrough a cause
هماthe two اتَّصلاbecame joined فافِصلهماso separate them both ثمthen أوصِناinstruct us
And no effect arises except through a cause;
An effect exists only due to its cause
The two are joined: separate them, then instruct us.
Relate them then detach and counsel us
طبعتَyou shaped علىfor حبِّlove of الجمالbeauty قلوبَناour hearts
فلولاfor without جمالُbeauty of الوَجهِthe face ماnot كانexisted حبُّناour love
You shaped our hearts to love beauty;
You made our hearts love beauty
For without the beauty of the face, our love would not exist.
Without a pretty face our love wouldn't be
أَعِدredo جَبلناour molding كيso that لاnot نُحبَّwe love حِسانناour beautiful women
وإلاand otherwise فهذاthen this ليسَis not ياO ربُّLord مُمكِناpossible
Remold us so that we do not love our beautiful women;
Remake our nature so we don't love our beauties
Otherwise, O Lord, this is not possible.
Otherwise, Lord, this is impossible
إذاif شِئتَyou wish تُغنيناyou make us self-sufficient عنwithout الكونِthe universe كلِّهall of it
وأماand as for عنwithout الأُنثىwoman فليسَthen there is no لناfor us غِنىself-sufficiency
If you wish, you can make us do without the whole universe;
If you wish, deprive us of the whole universe
But as for woman, we cannot do without her.
But we cannot live without the feminine
أرىI see الحسنَbeauty أصلَthe source of الحبّlove فيin كلِّevery مُهجةٍsoul
معَalong with الجسمِthe body والتَّصويرand painting والنَّحتِand sculpture والغِناand song
I see beauty as the source of love in every soul,
I see beauty as the origin of love in every mind
As well as in the body, painting, sculpture, and song.
With body, image, sculpture and song
ولستُand I am not إذاwhen قلتُI said الحقيقةَthe truth كافراًan unbeliever
فلولاfor without الهوىpassion والحسنُand beauty ماnot طابَbecame sweet عَيشُناour life
And I am no unbeliever when I speak the truth;
I'm no infidel for speaking the truth
For without passion and beauty, our life would not be sweet.
Without passion and beauty, life loses charm
هماthe two لطَّفاthey both softened منّاof ours قلوباًhearts وهذَّباand they both refined

The two softened our hearts and refined
They refined hearts and cultivated
Our minds, so we came to love civilization.
Minds till we loved civilization
