When night drew back the veil from rose-red twilight,

Then the azure sky unveiled herself, her cheek burnished,

I gazed longingly toward the horizon, which

Took on safflower hues, while the world's mantle was saffron-dyed.

And I spent the night inhaling the breaths of the east wind,

For their purest are those that race at dawn through the chill.

And I arranged flowers in bouquets, inhaling their scent,

And they reminded me of a mouth with the fragrance of incense.

And how often a newly appearing horn of the sun stirred my longing,

Until it became a disk of honey in the sky.

Then the world smiled upon it and rejoiced like a little girl

Who saw her mother bend tenderly and bare a breast.

And how sweet to me was a place to roam in field and forest,

To behold the beauty of the universe, near and far,

And hear birdsong and touch greenery,

And inhale fragrance where I long for renunciation.

And beneath shade that spread luxuriantly among pines,

I slept in a cradle of scattered leaves.

Yes, I have turned away from the pleasure of slumber,

To survey the world and watch it by myself.

For whoever grows used to prolonged sleep dies of it,

And whoever goes forth at dawn—the garden of eternity smiles upon him.

Then, with a glance, he grows drunk on the wine of beauty,

And he dreams dreams of happiness and glory.
