When a breeze wafts, I say, 'Peace,'

As though a vision of you had made a fleeting visit.

So return love's greeting in every breeze,

While lavender's fragrance wafts from it through the gardens.

And if shyness keeps you from returning it, smile,

Then I shall be content, and fear no reproach for you.

For my soul finds consolation in a greeting,

And in a smile that brings hope's crumbled remains to life.

Lo, every gentle breeze carrying my greeting

Passes over the abode of bliss as a soft south wind.

May God guard a home that held beauty and love,

So its remembered days became coolness and peace.

I inhaled the fragrance of roses from its scented breezes,

And there I beheld in you the moon in its fullness.

So I would see in it a sky and a garden,

And it would bring forth a star or split open flower-sheaths.

    فما عرفت عَيني لدَيك ظلاما

    Your nights are white, their light coming from your face;

So my eye knew no darkness beside you.

Oh, how sweet the dripping of my tears and heart's blood

Upon the acacias, lamenting through their doves.

And between us there is only tender conversation

That wafts as perfume or flows as wine,

And the reciting of poems that stir our feelings,

So we weep with tenderness or melt with passionate love.

And around us the stock flower gives you its color

And its fragrance, for it found your hands to be clouds.

It grew in bloom from the touch of your palm, from which

    I hope for lasting spring.

Your face contains every color and fragrance

Of flowers, where plucking was forbidden.

Through your love, you made life dear and adorned it,

As a beautiful dream made sleep dear.

And with gentleness, charm, and joy you delighted

A lover who began to quench his burning thirst with them.

    سمِعتِ خفوقاً منهُ كان كلاما

    I bore a heart flowing with feeling;

You heard its heartbeat, which was speech.

And a soul, songful like the souls of sparrows,

Rapturous, it loved to dwell in the gardens.

You melt with gentleness or shyness, so let fall

A veil, and lower a face veil if you come forth.

I fear for you the eye and the voice, if the eye gazes,

And if the voice rings while the heart takes flight and circles.

O my lady, you are the honored one

With whom all who love beauty are enamored.

You sat as queen upon the throne of the heart,

So I became ʿIṣām to beauty's Nuʿmān.

Your beauty is worshipped for the glory of its perfection,

And I was the leader of beauty's worshippers.

    Blessings on you for the beautiful days gone by;

Ah, if only that time had lasted longer and endured.

You granted closeness that was but a consolation from you,

So it cured neither my burning thirst nor my sickness.

So you are generous in what pleases the noble,

Though your withholding has angered the ignoble.

I shall thank you for what you bestowed on me; so remember a youth

Who remained true to the pledge and to your kindness.
