To what end do the radiant stars whisper to me,

while my heart soars toward them in stillness?

As though love's messenger between me and them

were a dazzling radiance upon my heart and eyes.

So I gaze toward them, dreamy and contemplative,

then inspiration descends from them in the form of thoughts.

Strange is the radiant star's concealment of her secret

with her lights, while the astrologer stands bewildered.

For watching her brings companionship, knowledge, and wisdom,

and the sights have stirred none but the sensitive soul.

How often I stay awake through the long night for her,

and my cloak is damp and fragrant in the grove.

And beneath me is a pillow of dewy grass,

and above me, curtains of lofty, spreading trees.

And only the memory of a night stirred my longing,

when my heart was fresh in the days of youthful passion,

and Lubna, a young girl, was beside me,

like a blossom with pure morning dew within it.

Then she said, our heads like two ears of grain that had

touched one another in the meadow, while the meadow swayed:

“Will you stay awake until you see the flowers, while darkness

blooms like the stars and the night moves on?”

Then I said, 'Yes,' while the wind spread her hair

over me, and that hair diffused fragrance.

As two angels we spent the night awake, and thus

the flowers opened, and the star kept vigil.

Ah, are there hearts for love after hers,

and after her eyes, are there eyes that gaze?

So raise them as two stars in the heart's firmament,

then the unveiled stars will not entice you.
