لقدindeed هاجَstirred الهوىpassion هذاthis الحريرُthe silk
أَمِنis it from شَفَتَيكِyour lips أمor منهُfrom it العبيرُthe fragrance
This silk has indeed stirred passion.
This silk has been disturbed by passionate love,
Is the fragrance from your lips, or from it?
Is it from your lips or is it your perfume?
حكىmirrored قلبيmy heart برقَّتِهin its tenderness فأمسىand became
علىupon النسماتِthe breezes يخفقُflutters أوor يطيرflies
It mirrored my heart in its tenderness, and now
My heart fluttered in its softness until it became
flutters or flies upon the breezes.
Like a breeze fluttering and flying through the air.
فلاso do not تدَعيlet النسيمَthe breeze يسرُّwhisper شيئاًanything
إليكto you فإننيfor indeed I صبٌّa passionate lover غيورjealous
So do not let the breeze whisper anything
So do not let the breeze reveal anything
to you, for I am a jealous lover.
To you, for I am a jealous lover.
وهذاand this عقدُكِyour necklace الغيرانُjealous مِثليlike me
يذوبُmelts فحبُّهُfor its love حبٌّa love صغيرsmall
And this necklace of yours is jealous like me;
And this pearl necklace of yours is like me,
it melts, for its love is slight.
Melting, for its love is but a little love.
جبينكُyour brow لاحَshone فيin ليلِthe night of التَّصابيyouthful dalliance
هلالاًa crescent منهfrom it نفسيmy soul تَستَنيرdraws light
Your brow shone in the night of dalliance,
Your forehead shone in the night of black hair
a crescent from which my soul draws light.
Like a crescent moon from which my soul takes light.
وشَعرُكِand your hair ظلمةٌa darkness سترتveiled هواناour love
وللأمواهand for the waters فيin الواديthe valley هديرa roar
And your hair is a darkness that veiled our love,
And your hair is a darkness that covered my disgrace,
and the waters roar in the valley.
To the valleys there is the roar of waterfalls.
وفيand on خدَّيكِyour cheeks وردٌroses منهُbecause of them أبكيI weep
فذاكَso those الوردُthe roses منfrom دمعيmy tears نضيرfresh
And on your cheeks are roses that make me weep;
On your cheeks is a rose from which I cry,
so those roses are fresh with my tears.
For that rose is a peer of my tears.
وفيand on شفتيكِyour lips ليfor me ماءٌwater ونارٌand fire
فقلبيso my heart لابتِسامِهماat their smile مُنيرradiant
And on your lips, for me, are water and fire;
In your lips for me are water and fire,
so my heart is radiant at their smile.
So my heart is illuminated by their smile.
وخَصرُكِand your waist رقَّgrew slender حتىuntil كادَnearly يَفنىvanishes
لذلكَtherefore رقَّgrew delicate شِعريmy poetry والشعورand feeling
And your waist grew so slender it nearly vanished;
Your waist is so delicate it almost vanished,
therefore my poetry and feeling grew delicate.
That is why my poetry softened and my passions.
قوامكِyour figure فيهِin it جناتٌgardens حسانٌbeautiful
وفيand in قلبيmy heart لِمَنظَرهاat their sight سَعيرa blazing fire
Your figure holds beautiful gardens,
Your figure holds beautiful gardens,
and at their sight a fire rages in my heart.
And in my heart for the sight of them is fire.
فمنso from تلكَthose المحاسنِbeauties ليfor me كنوزٌtreasures
علىupon كفَّيَّmy two palms جَوهَرُهاtheir jewels نثيرstrewn
So from those beauties I have treasures;
From those beauties I have treasures for myself,
their jewels lie strewn upon my palms.
In my palms their essence is ample.
حملتُI bore هواكِpassion for you فانشقَّتand split apart ضُلوعيmy ribs
وكادَand nearly القلبُthe heart منهاfrom them يَستَطيرflies out
I bore my passion for you, and my ribs split apart;
I carried your love until my ribs cracked,
and my heart nearly flew out from between them.
And my heart almost took flight from it.
وإمّاand if بتُّI spent the night أنشدُI recite شعرَthe poetry of حبّيmy love
فأبياتيthen my verses يُقَطِّعُهاbreaks them apart الزَّفيرsighing
And if I spend the night reciting the poetry of my love,
And if I begin to recite the poetry of my love,
then my sighs break my verses apart.
My verses are cut off by sighing.
أرىI see العشَّاقَthe lovers ليfor me خدماًservants وجنداًand soldiers
وإنيand indeed I فيin هواكِpassion for you لهمfor them أميرa prince
I see the lovers as my servants and soldiers,
I see the lovers as servants and soldiers to me,
and in my passion for you I am their prince.
And in your love I am their commander.
