They surpassed the groves in freshness and fragrance,

and the dawn in comfort, and the breeze in passing,

and roses in color, and butterflies in fluttering,

and shade in coolness, and the stars in light.

    وحَللنَ سعداً وارتحلنَ سُرورا

    And they were sweet as hopes and visited in friendship;

they alighted as good fortune and departed as joy.

They stole a smile from morning's blossoms,

and unfurled tresses from the waves of the seas.

They fashioned sweet mouths from my prose,

and took waists for themselves from my poetry.

They stretched out their hands on the day of our farewell,

so I felt velvet and silk in them.

So my palm grew fragrant, and thereafter, whenever a sweet

memory arose, I smelled fragrance from my fingertips.

How short their night was! And still

the night of union, like our bliss, is short.

Their cheeks are adorned by our tears,

and the beads of necklaces adorn necks.

They echoed love's song at evening gatherings,

and melted my heart with delight and joy.

So when I heard their talk one evening,

I took their talk for birdsong and the murmur of water.

They wished to immortalize beauty among humankind,

so they planted gardens and built palaces.

How many a smile or glance from a lovely maiden

has left us a trace that endures for ages!

They taught us poetry and melodies in

the night of love, and sculpture and painting.

So the credit—all the credit—is due to beauty, which

has made the garden of the arts verdant.

They carry rays of light in the blackness of their eyes,

and bestow fragrances from the whiteness of their mouths,

so that, when they meet us, they remind us of

the land of al-Sham, its fragrance, and the light.

So when they smile, they dispel the clouds of my melancholy,

and I see my star shining in the darkness.

And when they gaze with eyes that hold guidance,

they make my heart great amid adversity.
