The subjects' misery springs from the bliss of kings.

The people suffer under the rule of kings

How similar the freed slave is to the slave!

The freed slave is much like the slave

لا فرقَ بينَ قديمنا وجديدِنا

إلا بقولٍ زائفٍ مَسبوك

There is no difference between our old and our new,

No difference between our past and present

except in counterfeit words, finely cast.

Oppression is among its habits and its traits,

Oppression is in its nature and temperament

so woe to the vanquished and the pauper!

إما مقاومةٌ وموتٌ في الوَغى

إما محاباةٌ وختمُ صكوك

فاختر لنفسكَ خطةً ترضى بها
