The morning breeze came to me early, cool and moist,

and its fragrance healed an ailing heart.

And the sun shone from a sky

like crystal, now brimming with indigo.

I opened my heart to it like an eagle's wing,

and its light warmed my slender body.

And the flowers breathed fragrance, gathering every hue,

beside trees that bent over them, casting shade.

So I fancied the field a strolling peacock,

trailing its plumage in a dewy tail.

And the birds warbled a thousand melodies,

    saluting the lovely, majestic scene.

Then longing stirred within me for lands

for love of which I shall fall slain.

To them I bound my hopes and my love,

so my heart will neither tire nor turn aside.

Shall I roam at ease in their haven among my friends,

and slake my burning thirst with their choicest delights,

and after death be buried in their soil,

to remain a guest among my loved ones?

And showers from rainclouds water its flowers,

as a reward for one who did good.

And the maiden of the neighborhood remembers me and weeps,

as a dove weeps when it has lost its mate.

And when a bough of the spreading trees laments above me,

the echo of my grave answers it for a long while.
