وتقاسموهُand divided it among themselves تعاوناًcooperatively وتهارُشاand quarrelling with one another
The Europeans have pounced upon Marrakesh,
The Romans have pounced upon Marrakesh
And divided it among themselves, cooperating and quarrelling.
And divided it through cooperation and skirmishing
فكأنهُso it is as though it were بينَamong العلوجِthe barbarians طريدةًa hunted beast
فيin صَيدِهاhunting it يتفاحشونَthey act outrageously تفاحشاwith outrageous savagery
So it is like a hunted beast among barbarians;
As if it were amongst the thickets a hunted quarry
In hunting it, they act with outrageous savagery.
In capturing it they commit the utmost outrage
واحَسرتاهoh, my sorrow! علىfor بلادٍa land أهلُهاits people
يَهوونthey fall فيin حرِّthe heat of الجهادِholy war تعاطشاparched with thirst
Alas for a land whose people
Woe betide a country whose people
Fall in the heat of holy war, parched with thirst.
Are ardent in the heat of holy war and zeal

They die as martyrs for Arabhood and glory,
They die for Arabism, honor, truth and Islam
And truth and Islam in Marrakesh.
In Marrakesh

لنرىso that we may see القتالَthe fighting تقاضياًa settling of claims وتباطشاand an exchange of blows
Swords have no strength against cannon
The swords have no power over the cannons
To let us see battle as redress and an exchange of blows.
For us to see the fighting as litigation and contention

تلكَthose الديارِlands تحارشاًprovoking one another وتخادشاand clawing at one another
The French and the Spaniards jostle in
The French and the Spanish jostle
Those lands, provoking and clawing at one another.
In those lands through hostility and abrasion
فمتىso when نفلُّshall we blunt حديدَهمtheir iron بحديدِناwith our iron
وتكونُand become تصفيةُthe settling of الحسابِthe accounts تناقشاa debate
So when shall we blunt their iron with our iron,
When will we make their iron run with our iron
And the settling of accounts become a debate?
And the settling of accounts be through discussion
