قوليsay بعيشِby the life of أخيكِyour brother ماwhat تهويناyou desire
إنيindeed I am لراضٍsurely content بالذيwith what ترضيناyou are content with
Tell me, by your brother's life, what you desire;
Say not that I no longer love;
I am indeed content with whatever pleases you.
If I consent to part, blame me not.

حبِّيmy love فذاfor this is حكمُthe decree of الجمالِbeauty عليناupon us
You do not wrong me through what I suffer from
You have not wronged me, for what is
my love; such is beauty's decree upon us.
Decreed for us, so beauty deemed.
مرَّpassed الزمانُtime علىover عُهودِthe pledges of غرامناour passion
فبَلينَand so they wore out ياO حسناءُbeautiful one بلrather أُبليناwe were worn out
Time passed over the pledges of our passion,
Time passed since first we loved, till we
and they wore out, fair one—rather, we were worn out.
Grew old, my fair one; nay, till I grew old.
فلكمand how often أمرُّI pass علىby طلولِthe ruins of شبيبتيmy youth
والدَّمعُand tears يُغرِقُdrown وجنتيmy cheek والعيناand the eye
And how often I pass by the ruins of my youth,
Much have I borne since the days of my youth;
while tears drown my cheek and my eye.
Tears flood my cheeks and eyes.
والنفسُand the soul فيin ظُلماتِهاits darkness لاnot تهتَديfinds its way
إلاexcept بنورِby the light of تذكُّرٍremembrance أبقيناwe have kept
And the soul, in its darkness, finds no guidance
My soul in darkness cannot see
except by the light of a remembrance we have kept.
Except by light of memories we made.
وإذاand when التفتُّI turned إلىtoward الوراءِwhat is behind حسبتُنيI imagined myself

شخصينِtwo persons أوor طيفينِtwo phantoms باناthe two parted بيناa separation
And when I look back, I imagine myself
And when I look behind me I see
two persons, or two phantoms, parted from one another.
As if two ghosts that were us I see.
