Suad, repeat for me words soft and melodious.
My happiness, recite to me words that are gentle
And oh, how lovely the voice that made the mouth beloved!
How wonderful is the voice that endears the mouth

شَجانا فأبكانا عَشيَّةَ نَغّما
Your voice has ringing tones like a musician's strings,
Your voice has tunes like the strings of a singer
who stirred our sorrow and made us weep the evening he sang.
That made us passionate and weep at dusk with melody

I see pain for the heart in every pleasure,
I see pain in the heart with every pleasure
and pleasures have been nothing but suffering.
And pleasures were nothing but agony

فلاso do not تَكُbe إِلاexcept عاشقاًa lover مُتَظلِّماcomplaining of injustice
فلا تَكُ إِلا عاشقاً مُتَظلِّما
You say the best love is that whose longing lasts;
You say the best of love is that which longing for it lasts
so be nothing but an aggrieved lover.
So do not be but a lover feeling injustice

If there is no promise, I am content with a greeting;
If there was no promise, I would be content with a greeting
and if you do not greet me, I am content with a smile.
And if you did not greet me, I would be content with a smile

I am a lad who is still enamored with beauty

Your young man laughs at death and passion;
Your laughter is radiant to death and love
have you not heard him crying out in song?
Have you not heard it humming with melody?

For he is as fresh as spring,
It is nothing but fresh like the spring
and he burns as fiercely as a flame.
And it is nothing but burning like flames

May I be your ransom! The ways of youth are beautiful;
My dear, the morals of youth are beautiful
so do not deny them delight, Suad.
So do not deprive them, O my happiness, of enjoyment

من الحبِّ شيئاً أو فذوبي تندُّما
And life is but a heedless moment, so gather
And life is nothing but heedlessness, so take
some love, or else melt away in regret.
Something of love as provision, or melt regretting

So flow as a brook, and open your heart as a flower;
Make a stream flow for me and open your heart like a flower
and grow gentle as a breeze, softly murmuring among the branches.
And flutter a breeze through the branches being gentle

وراعي معَ العشَّاقِ بدراً وأنجُما
And sing as a nightingale, and coo for me as a dove;
Sing jokingly to me and imitate a dove for me
and gaze with lovers at a full moon and stars.
And watch the full moon and stars with the lovers

and you will know what happiness and heaven mean.
So you will know the meaning of happiness and heaven
