رَجِّعيsing again ياO ميُّMay ذيّاكَthat الغِناءْthe song
فهوَfor it is تذكارُa remembrance نعيمٍbliss فيin الشَّقاءْmisery
Sing that song again, O May,
Bring back that melody, O spring rain,
for it recalls bliss amid misery.
For it is a memory of bliss in adversity.
وامزُجيand blend الأنغامَthe notes بالألحانِwith the melodies فيin
هذهِthis الليلةِnight كيso that يحلوgrows sweet البُكاءweeping
And blend the notes with melodies on
Mix the tunes with the melodies this night,
this night, so that weeping may grow sweet.
So weeping becomes sweet.
مثلَlike عصفورَينِtwo sparrows عِشناwe lived فيin الحِمىthe haven
وتناجَيناand we whispered to each other صَباحاًin the morning ومساءand in the evening
Like two sparrows, we lived in the haven,
Like two little birds, we lived protected,
and whispered to each other morning and evening.
And whispered morning and eve.
فقِفيso stand نرثيwe mourn ونبكيand we weep فيin الدُّجىthe darkness
بعدَafter أنthat كنّاwe were نُغنّيwe sing فيin الضِّياءthe light
So stand; let us mourn and weep in the darkness,
Now we lament and weep in the gloom
after we once sang in the light.
After we sang in the light.
فعلىso on الأوتارِthe strings لحنٌa melody محزنٌsorrowful

So on the strings is a sorrowful melody,
On the strings is a mournful tune
after a joyful melody on the day of bliss.
After a joyful song in days of delight.

And come, bid me farewell, and shed
Come bid me farewell and shed
a tear that withers the flowers of modesty.
A tear that wilts the flowers of shyness.

تُلهبُsets aflame الرّيحَthe wind وتَدويand resounds فيin الفضاءthe expanse
And after I have gone, breathe a sigh
And after I’m gone, moan a moan
that sets the wind aflame and resounds through the expanse.
That ignites the wind and rumbles in space.

for things that are both sickness and cure,
Things that are illness and cure,

To a mouth wherein fire and water met.
