She passed like a rose blooming at midmorning,

    across the hall's green carpet.

And like a branch swayed by the east wind,

she trailed her hem over the marble.

And her lush beauty within her gown

is like clarified butter with sugar on a cold day.

Her cheek is translucent; its hue is as

if you mixed white with red.

So beauty and health overflowed together,

    as water overflows in rivers.

And her cheek is naturally aflame,

not borrowed—for it is a culprit, yet innocent.

And her lips are a rose that has blossomed,

and her mouth is a strand of jewels.

And the saliva in it is forbidden wine,

pressed from no vineyard but the monastery's.

And her eye is radiant; solace is found

in it by one lost in the desolate land.

And her blond hair flows freely,

like waves in the seas on a day of calm.

She walks, and eyes follow behind her,

so she resembles a commander in the fray.

How often we spent the night in delight,

as though we were ʿAlwa and al-Buhturi.
