عِدينيpromise me أفيis there in الدُّنياthe world أقلُّless مِنَthan الوَعدِthe promise
فلنfor ... will not تجديyou find مِثليmy like ولنand ... will not تَصِليyou attain union بَعديafter me
Promise me—is there anything in this world less than a promise?
You promised me less than I hoped for in this life
For you will never find my like, nor attain union after me.
So you'll never find another like me, never join me later
إذاif قلتِyou say ليto me يوماًone day أُحبُّكَI love you ياO فتىyoung man
قنعتُI am content بأحلىwith the sweetest ماwhat يُقالُis said فذاfor that قصديmy aim
If one day you say to me, "I love you, young man,"
If someday you say "I love you, O youth!"
I shall be content with the sweetest thing one can say—that is my aim.
I'm content with the sweetest words - such is my aim

طروبٌenraptured لألفاظٍby words منfrom الخرَّدthe shy maidens المُلدthe tender-limbed
It is the perfect word for one like me, for I
That is the ideal phrase for one like me, for I am
am enraptured by words from shy, tender-limbed maidens.
A connoisseur of words like aged wine
نشوقُfond of inhaling لأنفاسٍfor breaths إذاwhen ماemphatic particle تضوَّعَتthey waft fragrance
تُذكِّرُنيremind me of عَرفَthe fragrance of البنفسجِviolets والوردand roses
I love to inhale breaths that, when they waft their fragrance,
I yearn for breaths that when they blow
remind me of the scent of violets and roses.
Remind me of the fragrance of violets and roses
معذِّبتيmy tormentress الحسناءُthe beautiful one رَبُّكِyour Lord مُحسنٌbenevolent
فلاso do not تجحديbe ungrateful to رَبَّthe Lord of المحاسنِbeauties بالصدّby turning away
My beautiful tormentress, your Lord is benevolent;
My beautiful tormentor, your Lord is beneficent
so do not be ungrateful to the Lord of beauty by turning away.
So do not deny the Lord of Beauty by being cold
نظَمتِyou strung قلوبَthe hearts of العاشقينَthe lovers قلادةًa necklace
ولكنَّbut هذاthis القلبَheart واسطةُthe centerpiece of العقدthe necklace
You have strung lovers' hearts into a necklace,
You've strung lovers' hearts into a necklace
but this heart is the necklace's centerpiece.
Yet this heart is the clasp holding it together
فإنso if سرتِyou march يوماًone day مثلَlike زينبZaynab تدمُرٍof Palmyra
فقوليthen say لهمto them هذاthis الفتىyoung man قائدُcommander of الجندthe troops
So if one day you march like Zaynab of Palmyra,
So if someday you walk like the pride of Zeinab
then tell them, "This young man is commander of the troops."
Tell them "This youth leads the troops"
لأجلِكِfor your sake أرعىI watch النَّجمَthe stars ليتَكِif only you were نجمةٌa star
منfrom القبَّةِthe dome الزرقاءِblue تَطلَعُrises ليfor me وحديme alone
For your sake I watch the stars; would that you were a star
For your sake I tend the star, if only you were a star
rising from the blue dome for me alone.
Rising alone for me from the blue dome

Nor am I an astronomer watching the planets,
No astronomer tracks the stars
yet I have an observatory built on a mountain in India.
While I have an observatory built on India's mountains
فكمfor how often شاقنيmade me yearn نورُthe light of المقاصيرِthe secluded chambers فيin الدُّجىthe darkness
ولذَّةُand the delight of عَينيmy eye فيin التنوُّرِwatching for light والسُّهدand sleeplessness
How often the light of secluded chambers has stirred my longing in the dark,
How the lamps' light tires me in the darkness
and my eye's delight lies in watching for light and sleeplessness.
Yet my eyes delight in the first light and wakefulness
فهلthen will ترفعينَyou lift السترَthe curtain يوماًone day لتُشرقيso you may shine
علىupon القلبِthe heart إشراقَthe shining of الهلالِthe crescent moon علىupon اللحدthe grave
Will you then lift the curtain one day, to shine
Will you lift the veil one day and shine
upon the heart as the crescent shines upon the grave?
Onto my heart like the crescent on the horizon
رداؤكyour robe فيهin it الرَّوضُthe garden أخضَرُgreen مُزهِرٌblooming
وثغرُكِand your mouth فيهِin it لذَّةُthe delight of الخمرِwine والشَّهدand honey
Your robe holds a garden, green and blooming,
Your gown is a blooming green meadow
and your mouth holds the delight of wine and honey.
Your lips are the pleasure of wine and honey
فأجمِلso how lovely بَوشيٍis embroidery منfrom بنانِكِyour fingertips مُحكمٍfinely wrought
علىon مخملٍvelvet منهfrom it النّعومَةُsoftness فيin الخدِّthe cheek
So how lovely is the embroidery, finely wrought by your fingertips,
Bestow on me a kind glance from your radiance
on velvet from which the cheek draws its softness.
On velvet, whose softness is in the cheek
وليسَand is not مَلوماًblameworthy منwhoever تمتَّعَenjoyed ساعةًan hour
منof الحُسنِbeauty لكنَّbut الملومَthe blameworthy one أخوthe devotee of الزّهدasceticism
Nor is one blameworthy who enjoys an hour
And none blame who enjoy for an hour
of beauty; rather, blameworthy is the devotee of asceticism.
Beauty, but the blameworthy are the ascetic
