On the Egyptian shore, the youth of al-Sham lost his way,
On Egypt's shore a lad from Syria strayed
wringing his hands over his bleeding heart.
His hands wringing on his bleeding heart he laid

The beauty of al-Sham captivated him after parting from her,
Her beauty overflowed him after parting
and he yearned for that beauty in al-Sham.
So he yearned for the grace of Damascus, long delayed

She had indeed grown far from him, yet remained near
Though far from him, to his heart she stayed near
to his heart: the heart is an ardent lover of illusions.
For hearts, imaginings of lovers, oft stray

In his love for her he is but one,
In his passion for her he was but one
yet in separation he is divided into ten parts.
Yet in absence, torn in pieces, apt to fray

Our loved ones at Lebanon's foot, you
My loves on Lebanon's slopes, you are here
are present in spirit and absent in body.
In spirit, though far in body, you came

My heart still bleeds for our farewell,
Still bleeding my heart from our farewell remains
that evening when your tears met my streaming tears.
That eve your tears mingled with my tears the same

The waves tossed me about and crashed together,
The waves tossed me about, crashing swell
and night cast over them a cloak of darkness.
The night wrapped us in shadows, a dark veil

Yet I was never their victim, as the travelers were;
Unlike the ship's crew, I did not fall that day
I steadied my resolve through my daring.
But firmed my will, steadfast, I did not fail

And I told them: You must carry a youth
I said she must carry a bold, young man
who clasps the remnants of glory in a hero's breast.
Gathering glory's remnants in his chest so hale

Either deeply rooted glory beyond the sea,
Either glory awaits beyond the sea adorned
or a lion's fall at the heights of glory.
Or with the most high, a meadow forever pale

So I wished for neither wailing nor foam nor
Sorrows and ruin matter not to my kind
roaring; noble honor will never accept my retreat.
If kin live free, graced with gifts that avail

Jumana, do not weep: from your two eyes
I tame the lions, though refuse and deny
comes a distant youth's life; be gentle with an ailing man.
To cow the freeman's spirit, I will not curtail

Sing my poetry beside flowers I planted,
Between glory and love I waver and doubt
and loosen over them your luxuriant blond hair.
One calls behind and one leads before the trail

For your hair is sweeter in fragrance than my flowers,
My heart whispers of return, thousands of times
and your soul has sweeter dreams than my poetry.
My patience and pride curb me, keep me from the rail

Calamities and death are light burdens to one like me,
O troubled souls, join me, let us live as one
if his family lives in honor and plenty.
In sorrows a partnership of travails we'll form

لآبىI firmly refuse إباءَthe refusal of الحرِّa free man ترويعَfrightening آرامgazelles
I have consented to tame lions, yet I
On thorns we walk, while others slumber soft
refuse, as a free man refuses, to frighten gazelles.
On flowers in shades, their heads in blissful calm

Here I stand bewildered between glory and love:
They sip their wines in endlessly delight
this one called behind me, that one before me.
While we tend the stars, on bare mountains worn

My affectionate heart speaks to me of returning,
With the likes of us the world feels too confined
but my noble patience and pride restrain me.
Yet welcomes the wicked, the unjust and forlorn

O you who bear what I bear, come, let us live together,
We're like wormwood building our graves
and in our sorrows form a fellowship of pain.
To bring life to memories of slaves who were shorn

We walk patiently upon thorns, while others
Content with sweet remembrance under dust
sleep upon flowers in a generous patron's shade.
Though remembrance is scarce once a people are lorn

They spent the night sharing wine with singing girls,
We're plagued with a heart, a poet's, pained
while we spent ours watching stars above the hills.
Content with dreams, melodies reborn

The world has no room for our kind, yet its breast
Not in reciting verse or writing poems
is spacious for evildoers and bearers of sins.
Lies bliss, but gathering money and fortune sworn

Like silkworms, we build our own graves,
When the archer strikes the soaring eagle
to revive those who died as slaves to tyrants.
My heart wishes an arrow, toward the prey borne

We are content with a good name in the darkness of the soil;
On my forehead I walk, I the wandering poet
but how can remembrance be hoped for from a slumbering people?
Whose trace in the ruins of time lies worn

We have been afflicted with a poetic, suffering heart,
His breath kindled, his soul is rapt in inspiration
content with illusions, enraptured by melodies.
Flying in the sky of creativity born

Happiness is not in reciting poetry or composing it,
His tears between his lids are dear to him
but in amassing money and numbers.
Stingy except at times when anguish is sworn

Whenever the hunter shoots at an eagle circling aloft,
He did his duty in Baalbek and Palmyra
I wish for my heart an arrow from the archer's hand.
And came to weep for glory under pyramids outworn

Upon my heart I walk—I, the wanderer who
Peace be upon you O Nile, by glad tidings graced
has left traces of visits among time's remnants.
With the sweetest blooms and gentlest breeze of morn

For his breaths burn over them, and his soul
From Damascus in my scrolls I brought this gift
has grown accustomed to soaring in the air of inspiration.
And in a heart for beauty ceaseless and forlorn

His tear is precious between his eyelids;
As though on your green banks a voice shouts loud
he withholds it save for a lofty occasion.

He fulfilled a duty in Baalbek and Tadmor,
Has not the time come for the heedless to wake
and came to weep for glory in the shadow of pyramids.
Prisoners perplexed, still as idols, battered and worn

God's peace be upon you, O Nile; be refreshed
O Egypt's sons, why this disunity amongst you
with the sweetest flowers and the gentlest breezes.
You're plagued by malady that severs joints to scorn

I carried them from al-Sham in the folds of my cloak
Make peace, become empowered and strong again
to you, and in a heart forever hovering over beauty.
And build with deeds and rise on flags proudly borne

As though upon your green banks a voice
To Arabs belongs honoring heroes and sages
were saying: “The sons of heroes have been humbled like orphans.
With swords and pens, deeds and words that adorn

Is it not time for the drunken to awaken, now that they have become
Name your streets in every town for your heroes
captives, bewildered, motionless as idols?”
As examples for youth and objects of honor worn

Sons of Egypt, what is this estrangement among you?
Bones of men whose glory the earth does fill
You have been stricken by an illness that shatters the joints.
A glory built on inspiration nobly born

Make peace and become a nation of strength,
Mary, show Christian love, embrace Khadeejah
work earnestly at deeds, and gain honor through your luminaries.
That we forget the hatred of years forlorn

The Arabs must erect statues and effigies
And say, with cheek pressed against cheek not far
to men of swords and men of pens,
My brothers and cousins dispute and quarrel with scorn

Come before the people, let us shed our tears sincere
after heroes and learned men,
Not false tears, but truth drops, pure without scorn

so they remain examples and models for the young,
Maybe our pure tears can soften their hearts
and revive bones that deserve veneration—
And quench fires lit with any violent flame borne

the bones of men whose glory fills the earth,
Then flowers will bloom covering their graves
a glory they built upon skulls.
And hatreds under the shade of justice sworn
