هذهthis تغريدةٌa warble قدhas (perfect marker)
هذه تغريدةٌ قد
طَيّرتsent flying قَلبِيmy heart وعقليand my mind
طَيّرت قَلبِي وعقلي
This is a warble that has
This melody of yours
Sent my heart and mind flying.
Has stirred my heart and mind
رجِّعَنْهاdo sing it again لحزَينٍfor one in sorrow
رجِّعَنْها لحزَينٍ
يرتجيhopes for منكَfrom you التّسلّيsolace
يرتجي منكَ التّسلّي
Sing it again for one in sorrow,
Give it back to one who grieves
Who hopes for solace from you.
Seeking solace from your tune
أنتَyou بالإنشادِin singing فوقيabove me
أنتَ بالإنشادِ فوقي
إنif تَكُنyou are بالنّظمِin composing verse مثليlike me
إن تَكُن بالنّظمِ مثلي
In singing you surpass me,
You surpass me in your song
Even if in composing verse you are my equal.
If you can rhyme like I do
زادَكَmay He increase you اللهُGod جمالاًin beauty
زادَكَ اللهُ جمالاً
فيin التّغَنّيsinging والتّفلّيand preening
في التّغَنّي والتّفلّي
May God increase your beauty
May God increase your beauty
In singing and preening.
In singing and in trill
أعطِنيgive me وَزناًa meter جديداًnew
أعطِني وَزناً جديداً
لمdid not يكُنexist للشّعرfor poetry قبليbefore me
لم يكُن للشّعر قبلي
Give me a new meter
Give me a rhythm new
That poetry never had before me.
