O son of al-Walid, awaken, and O son of al-As!

Is there a deadly strike or a stratagem for deliverance?

The Romans have seized the frontier strongholds and readied

monsters of steel for a defiant people.

Their shells crushed hearts and tore apart

the bride's crown and the diver's pearl.

Barada, the Tigris, and the Euphrates are our waters,

and likewise the Jordan, then the Orontes.

But the sons of the Thames and the Seine have claimed

a right, while we are the hunter's quarry.

Oh, the anguish of strangers in their own homelands,

at becoming like birds in cages!

The peoples' sickness is mutual hatred and mutual abandonment,

and their cure lies in love and sincerity.
