O night of love, lure the clouds to the moon,

And let fall over us a veil of trees.

We are not intent on what our chastity rejects,

But we fear suspicion arising from scrutiny.

Beloved of my heart, how lovely you are, keeping vigil,

And the earth has been illumined by the moon's rising.

No—rather, by your face; for without it no moon

Would be lovely, nor would eyelids delight in wakefulness.

Do not be dismayed, for one's life goes by,

Either in the joy of love or in sorrow.

Lay on my neck a head in which are gathered

All the beauties of light and blossom.
