وقامةَand O figure الغصنِof the bough ضمُّembrace الطيفِof the phantom أنحلكِhas made you thin
O garden of beauty, summer's heat has left you barren.
O you whose beauty torments me in the heat of summer,
And O bough-like form, the phantom's embrace has made you thin.
And whose slender form mocks the bending bough,

Time sent me away before my soul found healing,
Before my thirsting soul found solace, time had parted us,
Till, when I returned hoping for reunion, it sent you away.
Then when I hoped we'd meet again, fate parted you.
أكحّلتكِdid she line your eyes with kohl التيshe who ربّتكِreared you ناعمةًin comfort
أَمor الغزالُthe gazelle الذيthat رَبَّيتِyou reared كحّلكlined your eyes with kohl
Did she who reared you in comfort line your eyes with kohl,
Were your eyes lined with kohl by the hand that raised you gently,
Or did the gazelle you reared line your eyes with kohl?
Or by the gazelle you raised whose eyes were lined the same?

Lower the veil, for my bliss lies in longing for
Unveil your face that I may find some comfort in
that little orb emerging from the darkness.
Seeing the two bright stars that shine within your veil.
الحبُّlove ماso long as كانit is إيثاراًselflessness وتفديةًand self-sacrifice
يهنئكِmay it bring you joy إنif شحَّis scant ليfor me دَمعيmy tears وسَحَّand pours forth لكfor you
Love, so long as it is selflessness and self-sacrifice,
Love is not sacrifice or ransom,
may it bring you joy if my tears are scant for me and pour forth for you.
My joy if I weep, my gift if you unveil.
