    O Creator of the universe, the village bells rang

    At sunset, and praise of You stirred the people's longing.

    And hymns to You shook the monastery's chapel,

    And Your servant's soul moaned within it, or yearned.

    والنهرُ يهدُرُ والصَفصافُ نوّاحُ

    And the wind drifts, and the field's fragrance spreads;

    And the river roars, and the willow wails;

    And the blossoms gaze among the branches like eyes,

    When they gaze out from veils whose fragrance is intense.

    يزورُ أهلَ الهوى بالشوق والأرق

    And the night is lovesick, lamenting in our forests;

    It visits lovers with longing and sleeplessness.

    And the star keeps shepherds company and guides them,

    And the black cloud conceals my star.

    والبحرُ ينثرُ من أمواجهِ زَبَدا

    And the mother, weeping, gazes toward the star;

    And the sea scatters foam from its waves.

    صباهُ كالوَردِ يَذوي والشَّذا يذهبْ

    O Lord, bring back to her a son who is far away;

    His youth withers like a rose, and the fragrance fades.

    He has sighs of longing for home and loved ones,

    And through the nights, upon the waves, he moans.
