O blossom of a leafy bough in spring,
O flower branch in spring, so delicate
Be generous to the lover with your lips and saliva.
My generosity, with a mouth for lovers, so delicate
حتّامَhow long أطمعُI hope بالوصالِfor union ومُهجتيand my soul
ذابتhas melted منfrom التعليلِvain assurances والتحريقand burning
How long shall I hope for union, while my soul
I yearn for union though my passion’s wasted
has melted from vain assurances and burning torment?
Melting from the excuses and evasion
أأردُّshall I draw back? كفيmy hand عنfrom ثيابكِyour clothes عفةًout of chastity
والشوقُand longing يدفعُنيdrives me إلىto التمزيقtearing apart
Shall I hold my hand back from your clothes out of chastity,
Shall I restrain my hand from your clothes in modesty
while longing drives me to tear them apart?
When longing drives me to tear them off?
ليfor me فيكِin you محنةُthe ordeal راهبٍof a monk متجلِّدٍsteadfast

Because of you, I suffer the ordeal of a steadfast monk,
With you I have the trials of an ascetic monk
whom the slinking tempter leads with flattery.
Whose habit the deceiver tugs in jest
إنif كانَis مذهبُكِyour creed التديُّنَpiety فيin الهوىlove
آثرتُI have preferred رأيَthe view الكافِرof the unbeliever الزنديقthe heretic
If your creed is piety in love,
If abstinence is your creed in love
I have chosen the unbelieving heretic's view.
I’d prefer the view of the heretic atheist
فهبيso grant المشوقَthe yearning lover منof الوصالِunion أقلَّهُthe least of it
واسقيand give drink منfrom الينبوعِthe spring بالإبريقwith the pitcher
So grant the yearning lover the smallest measure of union,
So grant me at least a little of the joy of union
and give him drink from the spring with the pitcher.
And let me drink from the spring with a jug
