فاشتمَّ ريحَ المسكِ من صفحاتهِ

فالطِّيبُ بالتذكيرِ لا التَّضميخ

So inhale the scent of musk from its pages.

So smell the scent of musk from its pages

For fragrance lies in remembrance, not in anointing with perfume.

For goodness is in remembering, not in smearing

واحفظ بقلبكَ ما تراهُ بمقلةٍ

خشعت من التغريمِ والترنيخ

And keep in your heart what you see with an eye

Humbled by fines and abasement.

وأضف إلى المجدِ القديمِ حديثَهُ

واحرص على شرفٍ بلا تلطيخ

And add new glory to the glory of old,

And add to the ancient glory its newness

And seek honor free of stain.

And strive for honor without stain

واحذر من الرومِ الخلاعةَ إِنها

لأشدُّ إضراراً من الزرنيخ

لأشدُّ إضراراً من الزرنيخ

And beware the Romans' debauchery, for it

And beware of the Romans' wickedness for it

Is indeed more harmful than arsenic.
