شجانيstirred my sorrow ظلامُdarkness الليلِof night والبرقُand the lightning يومضُflashes
وكنتُand I would إذاwhenever نامَslept الخَليّونَthe carefree أنهضُI rise
Night's darkness stirred my sorrow while lightning flashed.
The darkness of night disturbed me, and lightning flashed
And whenever the carefree slept, I would rise,
While I was awake though all were asleep
وأنشرُand I unroll منfrom ماضيَّmy past درجاًa scroll طَوَيتُهI rolled it up
فَيَعرُضُthen appears ليto me طيفٌa phantom وآخرُand another يُعرِضturns away
And unroll from my past a scroll I had rolled up.
I would unfold a path from my past I had folded
Then a phantom would appear to me, and another would turn away.
And a vision appears, then another fades away
أُحبُّI love منfrom الظلماءِthe darkness إرخاءَletting down سِترِهاits curtain
عليَّover me وأفكاريand my thoughts عليهِupon it تُنضنضquiver
I love how darkness lets its curtain fall
I love when darkness spreads its veil over me
Over me, while my thoughts quiver upon it.
And my thoughts flutter upon it
وإنand if أُلقِI lay down رأسيmy head مُتعَباًweary متقلباًtossing and turning
سمعتُI heard عروقيmy veins فيin التفكُّرِreflection تنبضpulse
And if I lay my head down, weary and restless,
And if I lay my weary, tossing head
I hear my veins pulse as I ponder.
I hear my veins pounding as they think
فأرّقنيso kept me awake عرقٌa vein منfrom الصدغِthe temple نابضٌthrobbing
كأنas though جَواداًa steed فيin المخدَّةِthe pillow يركضgallops
So a throbbing vein at my temple keeps me awake,
My temple throbs with sweat as if
As though a steed were galloping in the pillow.
A steed were galloping in my pillow
حشايَmy insides كنارٍlike a fire يُصطلىone warms oneself بلهيبهاat its blaze
وهَلand do تبردُcool الأحشاءُthe insides والرأسُand the head يرمضburns with heat
My insides are like a fire at whose blaze one warms oneself;
My guts blaze like a fire warming itself
And do the insides cool while the head burns?
Can guts and head cool when body burns?
وماand not أناI إلاbut عابرٌa passerby متفرّجٌa spectator
وماand not الكونُthe universe إلاbut مسرحٌa theater ليfor me ومعرضand an exhibition
And I am only a passerby, a spectator;
I’m but a spectator passing by
And the universe is only a theater and an exhibition for me.
And the universe is but a theater and gallery for me
وللشرّand for evil أحزابٌfactions وللخيرِand for good عصبةٌa band
وهذاand this one غداhas come to ينهَىforbid وذاكand that one يحرّضincites
And evil has factions, and good a band;
Evil has its factions and good its allies
And this one has come to forbid, while that one incites.
This forbids tomorrow while that provokes today
وماand not المرءُa person إلاbut عاملٌone who acts بطباعهِaccording to his nature
فلمso did not يرعَheed ماwhat بالدينِby religion والشَّرعِand sacred law يفرضis imposed
And a person is but one who acts according to his nature;
A person acts according to his nature
So he did not heed what religion and sacred law impose.
Disregarding what religion and law impose
صحائفُpages أهلِof the people الدينِof religion والشَّرعِand sacred law رثَّةٌtattered
غشاهاhas covered them غُبارُdust الغشِّof deceit والفارُand the mouse يقرضgnaws
The pages of the people of religion and sacred law are tattered;
The books of the pious and the law are soiled
The dust of deceit has covered them, and the mouse gnaws at them.
Covered by the dust of deceit and moth-eaten
إذاwhen الناسُpeople أعماهمblinded them تعصُّبُهمtheir fanaticism لماfor what
يُحبُّونَهُthey love it فالهالكُthen the doomed one المتعرّضthe challenger
When people are blinded by their fanaticism for what
When zealotry blinds people to what they love
They love, then the challenger is doomed.
Destruction awaits the trespassing fool
فبالكونِso about the universe والإنسانِand humankind والحبّand love والتقىand piety
أشكُّI doubt وليسَand is not الشكُّdoubt بالشكّby doubt يُدحضrefuted
So about the universe, humankind, love, and piety,
I doubt the universe, mankind, love and devotion
I have doubts; and doubt is not refuted by doubt.
But doubt itself cannot be doubted
إذاwhen زرتُI visited فيin فصلِthe season الخريفِof autumn خميلةًa grove
تُصَفِّقُهاbuffet it هوجُwild الرياحِthe winds وتنفضand shake
When I visit a grove in autumn,
When I visit a vineyard in autumn
Which the wild winds buffet and shake,
Shaken by gales tearing off leaves
رأيتُI saw بقاياremnants النضرِof verdure بينَamong غصونِهاits boughs
حشاشةَlast remnant of life مُضنىًof an invalid فيin ضلوعٍribs تُقَضقِضcrackle
I see the remnants of verdure among its boughs:
I see amidst its branches remnants of vitality
An invalid's last remnant of life within ribs that crackle.
Like a sickly dormouse in cracking bones
فأرجِعُso I return منهاfrom it موحشاًdesolate وتشوقُنيand make me yearn
رياضٌgardens موشاةٌembroidered وموجٌand waves مفضَّضsilvered
So I return from it desolate, and my longing is stirred by
I leave feeling lonely and yearn for
Embroidered gardens and silvered waves.
Gardens lush, waves foamy and splashing
أحبI love اخضراراًgreenness وازدهاراًand blossoming وإِنماbut only
يُرينيshows me زمانيmy time ماwhat أعافُI loathe وأُبغِضand I hate
I love greenness and blossoming, yet
I love verdure and blossoms but
My time shows me only what I loathe and hate.
My times show me what they abhor and despise
